Biographical Note

Gene Blakely was born on June 8, 1921 in Iowa. He was a prolific character actor, appearing in over 150 television shows, in numerous movies, and in 20 Broadway performances. Blakely began collecting materials documenting film and theatre at the beginning of his acting career. Whenever he was touring with a road production, he searched for book dealers who might handle the types of materials he collected. When Clifton Webb died, Blakely acquired his extensive book and photograph collection. Many of these items were inscribed to Webb by various celebrities.

Blakely moved to Phoenix in 1980 after having developed a taste for the city during his numerous performances at the Sombrero Theatre. In Phoenix, he acted at the Phoenix Little Theatre and helped found the Actor's Theatre of Phoenix in 1985. Blakely returned to his family home in Creston, Iowa in 1987 in order to be near family during his last days. He died in Creston of kidney and bone cancer on November 23, 1987.

Scope and Content Note

This collection houses biographical information, scripts, framed and unframed photographs, memorabilia, and other materials documenting Gene Blakely's acting career.

Series I: Personal and Biographical includes biographical material and membership records documenting Gene Blakely's life and work as well as lists of materials received with this collection that were dispersed to other parts of the department or library.

Series II: Scripts houses the scripts that Blakely used while preparing for his performances in films, on television, and on stage. Many of these items reflect last-minute changes and some contain Blakely's personal annotations.

Series III: Photographs contains approximately 550 items. Many of these images were acquired from Clifton Webb and some are autographed by the stars they portray, including W. C. Fields, Joan Crawford, Mae West, Ethel Merman, and Charlie Chaplin. Also included are two "flip pics" (Box 13), which consist of a series of pictures bound together depicting some action, in this case throwing a pie. When the pictures are flipped quickly, the action can be seen to take place.

The portraits in Box 14 (mostly publicity stills) were removed from a blue notebook and include cartes de visite and postcard photographs in varying sizes. They mostly depict stage and early silent film performers and several recent film stars. Some images are autographed.

The portraits in Box 16 (cabinet cards; 4.25" x 6.5") were carefully disassembled by David Moore (Curatorial Specialist, Conservation Department, ASU Libraries) from one of two photograph collages in the collection. Many are autographed. The numbers in pencil on verso refer to the order of location in the collage.

Series IV: Memorabilia includes nine china plates (SPEC OBJ S-11), each with the photograph of an early actor or actress printed under the glaze, and a scrapbook.

Separated Materials

Approximately 1,600 books received with this collection have been cataloged with call numbers beginning in "BL" and "BLP". The majority of these monographs are biographies of well-known stars, dramatic actors and actresses, comedians, playwrights, directors, producers, musicians, composers, and movie columnists. Also included are basic reference books including lists of Academy Award winners, directories of actors and actresses, annuals, and histories of theatre and film.

Several nearly complete runs of theatrical and film periodicals, including Stage, After Dark, Theatre, and Theatre World, have been added to Special Collections' Performing Arts periodical collection and assigned Library of Congress call numbers.

Sheet music for approximately 3,000 songs and liberatti were transferred to the Music Library in 2004. These first editions, many of which are rare collectors' items, carry the illustrations familiar to those who know or collect early sheet music.

A collection of records including soundtracks from Broadway and film musicals has been cataloged with identifiers beginning in "RPM" with Blakely listed as the donor.
