Biographical Note

Lawrence Calvin Hinds was born on November 27, 1858 to Calvin Jennison and Elvira M. (Cutler) Hinds in Pennsylvania. He married Clara Hay in Centre County, Pennsylvania on July 20, 1886. The couple eventually settled in Tabernash, Colorado, where Lawrence Hinds operated a mercantile business.

Howard Edwin Walker was born in August of 1883 in Illinois. His family moved to Colorado when he was a child and he eventually settled in Tabernash, where he (and later his mother Addie) boarded with Lawrence C. Hinds and his family. Walker seems to have spent most of his career in Tabernash working as a locomotive engineer and as a grocery merchant.

Scope and Content Note

The Lawrence C. Hinds and Howard E. Walker Photograph Album and Diary is a typescript diary with photographs tipped in recording the events and sights of an automobile trip from Tabernash, Colo. to Mexico City, Mexico and back made during February and March of 1939 by Hinds and Walker.

The men began at Tabernash, Colorado traveled south through Pueblo, Colorado; Raton Pass, New Mexico; Dalhart, San Antonio, and Laredo, Texas; along the edge of the Gulf Coastal Plain in Mexico from Monterrey through Victoria and Zimepan to Mexico City. Side trips to Veracruz and Guadalajara included Cuernevaca, Maluca, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Chula, Orizaba Valley, and Fortin. The return trip (beginning with TRI 375) includes many of the same locales, as well as Villa Juarez, Mexico and Austin, Texas. Additional locales are mentioned in the series below.

Photographs depict the travellers and their Buick roadster, roads, scenic landscapes, and cityscapes. Historic structures visited include the Temple of the Winds, the Pyramid of the Sun, and Chapultepec Castle.

Arrangement

The diary and photographs are arranged chronologically with miles traveled each day noted in the margin.
