Historical Note

In 1887 Denis Riordan purchased the Ayer Mill, which had been established in Flagstaff in 1881. Riordan renamed the company the Arizona Lumber and Timber Company and became its first president. His brothers, Michel and Timothy, joined him in Flagstaff to help him with the business. The Arizona Lumber and Timber Company suffered a devastating fire on its first day of operation-July 16, 1887. The reconstruction of the plant saw many innovations which made this lumber company one of the most progressive in the Southwest during the 1890's. The company was incorporated under the laws of the Territory of Arizona on January 1, 1890.

Between 1890 and 1900 the company operated a mill in Clark's Valley (Lake Mary) known as "The Swamp". Timber obtained from this mill was hauled by the company's Central Arizona Railway, to the main mill in Flagstaff, 25 to 30 miles away. In 1900 the company constructed a dam that formed a lake which was named Mary after Timothy Riordan's oldest daughter, Mary.

In 1887 AL and T obtained control of the Greenlaw Mill which was then located at a town called Cliffs, on the eastside of Flagstaff. This plant was operated until 1925 when it was dismantled.

On August 2, 1898 the Flagstaff mill once again burned to the ground but was quickly rebuilt beginning in October of that year, and reopened in February 1899. On August 23, 1898, Denis Riordan resigned as the Company president; Timothy Riordan served as president in his place until June of 1933.

During the early depression years, 1929-1933, the mill operated only sporadically. In 1933 Mr. J.C. Dolan purchased the controlling capital stock from the Riordan family and the capital stock in 1936. In 1941 the Saginaw and Manistee Lumber Company of Williams leased the Flagstaff plant for a period of 15 years with an option to buy. Saginaw and Manistee was purchased by Southwest Forest Industries in 1953, and much of the machinery was moved to their plant on Butler Avenue in Flagstaff which became Stone Forest Industries in 1991. Stone Forest Industries closed the Flagstaff operation on May 15, 1993.

Scope and Content Note

The bulk of this collection spans the time period of 1889-1952 and provides a sampling of the operations of the company. The collections covers a geographical area roughly 60 miles to the west and south of Flagstaff.

Records contained within this collection are typical business records one would expect to find for a company of this size. Important records include deeds to local land holdings; maps and survey books relating to the Central Arizona Railway; names of early settlers in the region who had a debt or dealings with the company.

This collection is important in that it documents the operations of a logging company for almost a hundred years and illustrates how the timber business changed over that time in response to economic demands. The collection is also valuable for researching Northern Arizona settlers and land ownership, water development, logging railroads, the cattle and sheep industries, and land use over time.

Finally the collection contains 160 photographs that document the logging and lumbering operations (including mill construction) of the Arizona Lumber and Timber Company during the 1890s and early 1900s. The photographs also include Lake Mary, 4th of July festivities and the Navajo Ordinance Depot. Many of the photographs can be found in the Cline Library's Digital Archive http://www.nau.edu/library/speccoll/index.html

This collection compliments the much larger Arizona Lumber and Timber Company holdings of the Arizona Historical Society northern division.

Many of these documents were labeled with a number and file which allowed the original order to be maintained. This series may be one of the most valuable in the collection, as there are deeds and other business materials going back to the 1880's which give descriptions and locations of property belonging to early settlers and citizens of Flagstaff. The most notable discovery was the deed to Fort Moroni, a Mormon Fort in Fort Valley north of Flagstaff area, the town site of Agassiz (Boston Place) which was established in 1876 and lost until 1992.

NAU.PH.676 Photographs 1882 ca.-1950.
This is a collection of 160 black-and-white photographs; 19 cm x 25 cm and smaller.
This collection of photographs principally document the logging and lumbering operations (including mill construction) of the Arizona Lumber and Timber Company during the 1890s and early 1900s. The collection also contains photographs of Lake Mary around the time the first check dam was constructed in 1904. Also included are photographs taken during the 4th of July festivities of 1902. The remaining photographs are of the official opening of the Navajo Ordinance (Army) Depot in December of 1942. Most of the photographers are unidentified, however many from the 1890s are attributed to Calvin Osborn.
Digital portions of this collection are available here.
