Historical Note

The Grand Canyon Trust started in 1985. Jim Trees decided to leave behind a successful career to pursue starting a conservation organization that had germinated on a river trip in the Grand Canyon. The first board meeting of the Grand Canyon Trust was held May 4, 1985 in New York. Grand Canyon Trust is headquartered in Flagstaff, Arizona, and maintains field offices in Scottsdale, Arizona, Moab, Utah, and Springdale, Utah. The Trust's growing membership, which in 2009 totaled about 6,000 individuals and organizations, includes residents of Plateau communities, Native Americans, state, federal and tribal government officials, public and private land managers, scientists, business interests, and others from around the world. Their primary mission is to protect and restore the canyon country of the Colorado Plateau.
