The Grand Canyon Trust started in 1985. Jim Trees decided to leave behind a successful career to pursue starting a conservation organization that had germinated on a river trip in the Grand Canyon. The first board meeting of the Grand Canyon Trust was held May 4, 1985 in New York. Grand Canyon Trust is headquartered in Flagstaff, Arizona, and maintains field offices in Scottsdale, Arizona, Moab, Utah, and Springdale, Utah. The Trust's growing membership, which in 2009 totaled about 6,000 individuals and organizations, includes residents of Plateau communities, Native Americans, state, federal and tribal government officials, public and private land managers, scientists, business interests, and others from around the world. Their primary mission is to protect and restore the canyon country of the Colorado Plateau.
The Grand Canyon Trust Records consists of organizational records of the Grand Canyon Trust, including correspondence, meeting minutes, financial statements, board member resumes, a mission statement and plans. It also contains several files relating to the Grand Canyon History project, including a copy of a letter from Barry Goldwater to Mary Beckwith, documentation and sound recordings related to oral history interviews conducted in 2000 with Bert Fingerhut, Martin Litton, and Jim Trees, and some working documents related to relevant environmental issues. The records include a memorial volume produced by Steve Ratcliff and dedicated to the memory of Paula Schiewe.
