AbstractThis collection consists of personal letters, professional correspondence and receipts of Thomas S. Sedgwick. Serving in the Union Army during the Civil War where he reached the rank of General. Later, he served in the U.S. Interior Department as railroad surveyor and engineer. Much of the correspondence pertains to his work with the Memphis and El Paso Railroad, later to become the Texas Pacific Railroad where he served as Chief of Engineers. He also served as President of the Board of State Harbor Commissioners at San Diego, California in 1890-1900.

Biographical Note

General Thomas Sedgwick was born 13 August 1828 Zanesville, Ohio, to Robert Hall Sedgwick and Ellen Jane Stewart. He served during the Civil War in the 113th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on General Thomas' staff, was later promoted to General Rosencrans command and promoted to the office of Colonel. Before the end of the war, he was promoted to the office of General. He then resided in Washington, D.C. serving with the Department of the Interior as a Surveyor of Railroads West. At the age of 42, he was in San Diego California serving the United States Government in forming the Memphis and El Paso Railroad, later to be renamed the Texas Pacific Railroad. He was Chief of Engineers. He died in San Diego in 1904.
