University of Arizona College of Medicine first opened for patient treatment in
August of 1972. I had come here in September of 1971, and found the new medical
school with absolutely no radiation therapy equipment or any capability for
cancer treatment at all. Together with some concerned citizens and other
physicians around the state, we introduced a request to the State Legislature
for funding to initiate this new center. An emergency bill …was signed into law
by the governor on May 23, 1972. We installed our first linear accelerator
radiation treatment machine in July of 1972, and initiated patient treatment

looked over the list of the present Board of California Medical Examiners, and
I don't know any of them. I did talk to the former President of the Board,
however, and he is going to meet with the Board next week, and will bring up

far we had gotten in our treatment techniques and equipment here at the
University of Arizona. I do feel clinically we have arrived at very near our
original objective; although in terms of basic clinical research and full
teaching programs, we have still some distance to go…. I was also pleased to
hear that Theresa has decided to attempt medical school. I know that she has

both from finishing up as M.D.'s as Carol and I once tried to do. As I believe
I have told both you and Theresa, I have often thought we concentrated our

intolerable as far as the Radiology Department in general was concerned, and

library (circulation clerk)…Bob Waggener…I am relieved and happy to hear that
your recovery was so rapid and complete…Theresa [Lugwig]…San Antonio Community
Hospital…. Well, Max, as far as I am concerned, I will be forever in your debt.
Medical school has opened a whole new world to me which would have been
unattainable without your assistance at a time when you were critically ill and
had so many pressures upon you…University of Wisconsin…. As regards
radiotherapy and medical physics here, the situation is not quite what one
might prefer…A strong radiologist is sorely needed…There is not even one
full-time therapist here and yet half the number of patients treated at
Galveston is the current census here. The main treatment unit is an old cobalt
machine from Scott & White Hospital…plenty of potential but little kinetic
energy at the present time in our radiology department…interests in
                     radiobiology and physiology…microcirculation studies…radium dosimetry….
Supposedly there is to be clinical trials of bone mineral measurements as soon
as the adjacent VA hospital gets its "Norland-Cameron" Scanner. Also, a new
radiation therapy center is opening across the street at Methodist. They will
have an 18 Mev Lenac [Linac?] (after you solve the problems c [with] yours – hi
to Bill C.)…there is one radiobiologist here in town by the name of Meltz. He
is supposed to be good and is located at Southwest Research (where we did our
trial run with the Argon ion in 1969 c [with] Dr. Wallace Anderson.)…Hi to Bill
                     Connor and Bob Miller.
