The monument was established in 1939 and contains the ruins for one of the largest known pueblos with 110 rooms, including second and third story structures, built by the Singua Indians during the period 1100-1450 A.D. Comprising of 42 acres, Tuzigoot is now open to public visitors and along with a museum.

Louis R. Caywood (1906-1997) and Edward H. Spicer (1906-1983) were both graduate students at the University of Arizona in the 1930's when they worked together at Tuzigoot, King's ruin, Fitzmaurice ruin, and other sites in west central Arizona. Both archaeologists excavated the Tuzigoot ruins from 1933-1935 with funding from the federal Civil Works Administration and Works Project Administrations.
