Historical Note
Tuzigoot National Monument lies at the upper end of the Verde Valley in Yavapai
County, Arizona. The monument was established in 1939 and contains the ruins for one
of the largest known pueblos with 110 rooms, including second and third story
structures, built by the Singua Indians during the period 1100-1450 A.D. Comprising of 42
acres, Tuzigoot is now open to public visitors and along with a museum.
Louis R. Caywood (1906-1997) and Edward H. Spicer (1906-1983) were both graduate
students at the University of Arizona in the 1930's when they worked together at
Tuzigoot, King's ruin, Fitzmaurice ruin, and other sites in west central Arizona.
Both archaeologists excavated the Tuzigoot ruins from 1933-1935 with funding from
the federal Civil Works Administration and Works Project Administrations.
Scope and Content Note
Consists of materials documenting Tuzigoot, King’s ruin, Fitzmaurice ruin, and other
sites in west central Arizona as excavated and studied by Louis R. Caywood and
Edward H. Spicer in the 1930s. Included is correspondence, field journals,
photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, manuscripts, and final reports
by Caywood and Spicer.
Arrangement
This collection is organized into files of correspondence, field journals, clippings,
and photographs.
Access to specific information about the nature and location of archaeological
resources may be restricted pursuant to the United States Archaeological Resources
Protection Act of 1979 (ARPA) and Arizona Revised Statutes, Title 39-125. ARPA
includes a specific exemption from the the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)
requirements for information about the nature and location of archaeological
resources (16 U.S. Code 470hh: Confidentiality of information concerning the nature
and location of archaeological resources).

This artificial collection was created by bringing together materials donated by
Rosamond Spicer (ASM ACC 96-183) and from small manuscript collections A-1083,
A-1084, A-1085, and A-1087.
