Historical Note
The Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society (AAHS) was founded in 1916 by Arizona State Museum Director Byron Cummings, as an affiliate of the ASM. The mission of AAHS is to foster the growth and sharing of knowledge of the diverse communities in the U.S. Southwest and Northern Mexico through time and its vision is for AAHS programs and activities to support strong collaborative relationships and community connections that ensure respect for and preservation of regional heritage.
AAHS publishes Kiva quarterly; it has become the premier journal of southwestern archaeology and history. It publishes a monthly members’ newsletter, Glyphs, which advertises a monthly members’ lecture, and field trips, as well as short articles by AAHS president and information on ASM activities. Over the years, AAHS has conducted archaeological excavations, collections and records from which are curated at ASM. Until about 30 years ago, the AAHS board and the management of Kiva, has been largely staffed by ASM employees and graduate students appointed by the ASM director. Currently, at least one ASM staff member sits on the AAHS board. The annual AAHS book sale continues to be an important source of income for the ASM Library.
Scope and Content Note
The Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society (AAHS) Records document the full range of the Society’s organizational, administrative, financial, and programmatic activities from 1916 to 2024. The collection measures approximately 49 linear feet and is arranged in 107 boxes across 14 series.
Materials include board meeting minutes, bylaws, articles of incorporation, operations manuals, and annual reports that reflect the governance and internal decision-making of the organization. Financial files span multiple decades and include tax records, bank statements, investment documentation, and fund reports. Membership materials consist of correspondence, subscription records, mailing lists, and renewal documentation for both individuals and institutions.
A substantial portion of the collection is devoted to AAHS’s publications, including Kiva and Glyphs. These records feature editorial correspondence, author contracts, article proofs, exchange agreements, pricing sheets, and service agreements. Documentation of field trips, lectures, educational classes, and community events includes planning files, promotional materials, participant waivers, and event reports.
Photographs, scrapbooks, and audiovisual media capture AAHS events, field activities, conferences, and award presentations. The collection also includes records of the annual book sale, oral history agreements, and miscellaneous materials such as news clippings, committee reports, and award documentation. Oversized items include posters prepared for the Society for American Archaeology conference and print proofs of Kiva issues.
The original order has been maintained where possible, with series arranged chronologically.
Access to specific information about the nature and location of archaeological resources may be restricted
pursuant to the United States Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 (ARPA) and Arizona Revised Statutes, Title 39-125. ARPA includes
a specific exemption from the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requirements for information about the nature and location of archaeological
resources (16 U.S. Code 470hh: Confidentiality of information concerning the nature and location of archaeological resources).
