Biographical NoteRobert Anthony Trennert was born to Robert Anthony and Mabel Valentine (Chestnut) Trennert on December 15, 1937. He had one sister, Norma Lee (Trennert) Nelson (1940-2014). Trennert earned his Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1969 and worked as a History Professor at Arizona State University, where focused on the American West and Native American history. He wrote a number of books, including Alternative to Extinction: Federal Indian Policy and the Beginnings of the Reservation System, 1846-51 (1975), Indian Traders on the Middle Border: The House of Ewing, 1827-54 (1981), The Phoenix Indian School: Forced Assimilation in Arizona, 1891-1935 (1988), White Man's Medicine: Government Doctors and the Navajo, 1863-1955 (1998), and Riding the High Wire: Aerial Mine Tramways in the West (2001). Scope and Content NoteThese photographs primarily show the railroad and lumber industry in the vicinity of Flagstaff, Arizona, including Southwest Lumber Mills' rolling stock and the Flagstaff Lumber Company's mills. Also included are early street scenes of Flagstaff and Williams.
