Biographical Note

Daniel Stephen Halacy, Jr. was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1919. He earned an associate of arts degree from Phoenix College and a bachelor of arts degree from Arizona State University. He was a veteran of both World War II, in which he served in the United States Army Air Corps, and the Korean War, in which he served in the United States Air Force.

After the Korean War, Halacy spent several years in technical writing for such firms as AiResearch, Goodyear Aerospace, and Motorola. His studies led him to the conviction that practical development of solar power was critical in the face of the growing energy crisis. In 1963, he published his views in a book, The Coming Age of Solar Energy, with a revised edition published in 1973. Halacy also authored Fabulous Fireball; the Story of Solar Energy (1957), Experiments with Solar Energy (1975), and Earth, Water, Wind, and Sun, our Energy Alternatives (1977).

Halacy served two terms in the Arizona State Senate from 1967 to 1970 and was an assistant in the field of solar energy in the office of U.S. Senator Paul Fannin of Arizona in 1975 and 1976. Halacy was a key participant in an all-out, but ultimately unsuccessful, effort to have the U.S. government locate the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI) in Arizona. Halacy later resided in Lakewood, Colorado, where he died in 2002.

Scope and Content Note

The Daniel Halacy Collection consists of correspondence and papers relating to aspects of his interest in the development of solar energy. The collection is divided into two series.

Series 1, SERI Files, reflects the effort by Arizonans to bring the national Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI), which had been created by the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA), to Arizona. This series traces the campaign conducted from 1974 to 1976 by public officials, academics, and business interests to achieve that end. Contained in twelve folders arranged chronologically are letters, private and public reports, minutes, and miscellaneous papers, concluding when it was apparent that Arizona would not be selected as the location for SERI.

Series 2, The Solar Jubilee, consists of records, arranged in twelve folders, pertaining to the annual meeting of the American Section of the International Solar Energy Society held in Phoenix, June 1-6, 1980.
