Biographical NoteWilliam Alvin (Bill) Baum was born on January 18, 1924 on a small farm near Toledo, Ohio. He graduated from the University of Rochester in 1943 with a bachelor's degree in physics and then began his graduate studies at Caltech. He worked in the Navy Liaison Office at Caltech and in the Optics Division of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, D.C. during World War II. At the NRL, Baum's group used captured German V2 rockets to send scientific instruments above the atmosphere, where they obtained the first ultraviolet spectrum of the Sun.
Baum returned to Caltech after the war and obtained his PhD in physics in 1950. He was offered a position at Mt. Wilson and Palomar Observatories, where he developed instrumentation capable of counting individual photoelectrons during long exposures with the Hale 200-inch telescope at Palomar. He worked with astronomers such as Edwin Hubble, Walter Baade, Allan Sandage and Halton Arp. Baum was interested in developing two-dimensional photon-counting devices to replace photographic plates. This led to projects at the Carnegie Institution in Washington, D.C. and Imperial College in London.
In 1960-61, Baum spent a year as a visiting professor in the physics department at Imperial College. While in London, he met Ester Bru, and they were married in her native country of Norway in June of 1961. They returned to California for a few years, and in 1965 Baum became Director of the newly built NASA-funded Planetary Research Center (PRC) at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. Baum’s work at the Planetary Research Center is of special interest because of the role the PRC played in facilitating studies of the planets, particularly Mars, and serving as a collection center for planetary photographs. The building originally contained photographic labs, plate and film storage facilities, and labs for instrument development. The PRC was an important source of planetary photographs and information for scientists, authors, publishers, and other research institutions. Baum was also Principal Investigator of the NASA grant that was used to develop the PRC, and therefore responsible for a significant amount of Lowell’s total funding. Baum’s research at Lowell included stars, galaxies, image tubes, planetary atmospheres and surfaces, and comets.
In addition to his role as Director of the PRC, Baum coordinated NASA’s International Planetary Patrol Program, in which several observatories from around the world continuously observed and photographed the planets. Lowell Observatory organized the worldwide program and provided cameras to all of the observing sites and new 24-inch telescopes to three of them. The planetary images taken at each site were processed and stored at the PRC. The program ran from 1969 to the early 1980s, gathering new information about the surfaces and atmospheres of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Baum was involved in the 1975 Viking mission to Mars, serving on the Orbiter Imaging Science Team, the Viking Landing Site Selection Group, and the Viking Data Analysis Team. He was also a member of the team that designed and built the electronic camera system for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and he authored or co-authored more than 20 scientific papers about results from HST. He also published over 200 papers on cosmology, stellar populations, the HST camera, image detectors and the solar system.
Baum retired from Lowell in 1991 and moved with Ester to Seattle, where he took a position as Research Professor in the astronomy department at the University of Washington. His professional memberships included the American Astronomical Society, International Astronomical Union, Royal Astronomical Society, and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Baum developed Parkinson's Disease in 2001, and he died on June 10, 2012.
Scope and Content
The William A. Baum Papers contain research notes, administrative records, photographs, slides, glass plates, charts, reel tapes, committee notes and correspondence.
The collection is organized into four series:
I. Working Papers, 1926-1991.
II. Other Professional Activities, 1929-1990.
III. Non-Research Activities, 1967-1980.
IV. Correspondence, 1942-1990.
The Working Papers series consists of Baum's administrative records pertaining to the Planetary Research Center, the International Planetary Patrol Program, and general Lowell matters. The Other Professional Activities series includes records related to Baum's work with NASA, the Viking Mission to Mars, Mariner, the Carnegie Image Tube Committee, Mt. Wilson and Palomar Observatories, the Large Space Telescope (Hubble Space Telescope), the Space Shuttle, and the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA). The Non-Research Activities series consists of files regarding the Westridge housing development in Flagstaff, and the Correspondence series includes Baum's letters to and from colleagues and friends.
