Biographical Note

Mary K. Allen was born on November 29, 1956. She lived much of her adult life in the little town of Washington, Utah in the southeastern corner of that state. Her interest in archaeology began at the age of eight when she went on a family outing to Nine Mile Canyon, an archaeological treasure-trove in eastern Utah's Carbon County. Her father was an outdoor enthusiast, and her mother had an abiding interest in rock art and archaeology. Through them, Allen gained an interest in wilderness and the culture of Indigenous peoples known as the "ancient people," including the Ancestral Puebloans and their contemporary descendants, in what is now the Southwestern United States.

The day after her high school graduation, Allen took a bus south to the Arizona Strip to work at an excavation at Pipe Springs on the Kaibab Paiute Indian Reservation with Dr. Richard Thompson of Southern Utah State College (now Southern Utah University). She later worked with Dr. Thompson at the Tuweep District in Grand Canyon National Park. Fired by her love of archaeology, she obtained a bachelor's degree in Anthropology from the University of Utah and furthered her education at several field schools in Utah and Arizona. In subsequent years, her interest gravitated away from excavations and towards rock art, a research area largely ignored by archaeologists at the time. Allen found and documented many previously unknown rock art panels in western Grand Canyon and in Kanab Creek. In the 1980s, she discovered what some considered a new rock art style, which she named Grand Canyon Polychrome. (It is now known as the Esplanade style.) Allen wrote two large-scale reports on her discoveries,New Frontiers in Rock Art: Grand Canyon (1988), and Rock Art Investigations in the Western Grand Canyon (1991). Through ongoing relationships with the Bureau of Land Management, the National Forest Service, and the National Park Service, she contributed her knowledge of 60 cultural sites (mostly rock art) on the Arizona Strip to the government register.

Allen's interest in working outdoors and experiences with Grand Canyon boatmen at Tuweep led her to the river running profession. Starting with a small company in Moab, she became a skilled boatman, working for over 20 years for Colorado River and Trails Expeditions in Grand Canyon and along other stretches of the Colorado and Green rivers. By talking with and observing the expert photographers she met on her trips, Allen became very adept with a camera. She published many of her photographs and kept the other organized for future publication.

Cancer claimed Allen's life in her 50th year. She died on January 31, 2006.

Information in this biographical note is based upon materials within Allen's papers as well as a brief biography provided to Special Collections and Archives in 2009 by the donors of Allen's papers.

Scope and Content

The Mary K. Allen Papers document Allen's research regarding the rock art of the American West, with particular emphasis on the Grand Canyon and the Colorado Plateau. Her manuscript materials (Record Group 1, NAU.MS.412) include field notes, hand-drawn and annotated published maps of the sites, and pencil drawings of many styles of rock art. It also includes drafts of publications written and prepared by Allen detailing her explorations and her theories about stylistic elements in rock art, unpublished writings by others on archaeological topics, and her correspondence with other rock art enthusiasts.

Allen's slides and born-digital photographs (Record Group 2, NAU.PH.2009.5) show these sites in encyclopedic detail. Her photographic materials reflect her particular interest in the pictographs and petroglyphs of the Grand Canyon region, but her research interests took her to sites in California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico as well as locations all over Arizona. Her photographs reveal a huge variety of rock art styles. Allen also took many photos of participants on her float trips on the Colorado and Green Rivers plus many scenic photographs of the places she visited, both by boat and on foot.

Acquisition Information

The trustees for Allen's estate donated her papers and photographs to the Cline Library in three separate donations (2009, 2012, 2013).

Processing Information

The Mary K. Allen Papers were initially processed by Hank Hassell in 2009. Later additions of photographic materials were also processed by Hassell.

The materials were minimally reprocessed by Samantha (Sam) Meier in November 2019 to implement series in the Manuscripts record group (NAU.MS.412) and to clarify the arrangement structure of the Photographic materials record group (NAU.PH.2009.5). Meier modified Hassell's 2009 physical arrangement as well as the finding aid to implement 3 series within the Manuscripts record group.

Special Collections and Archives has retained a previous version of the Mary K. Allen Papers finding aid to assist any users who may need to update their citation information following this 2019 reprocessing.

NAU.PH.2009.5 Record Group 2: Photographic materials, 1990-2005 (14,632 35mm slides, 51 CD-R and DVD-R discs containing digital photographs)
Scope & Content
The Photographs record group contains slides, digitized slides, and born-digital photographs pertaining to Allen's interest in rock art and her experiences as a river runner. Most of the rock photographs pertain to petroglyphs and pictographs in Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and California. The river running photographs largely reflect trips Allen took in the Grand Canyon between 1994 and 1998. Allen's original labels for certain images and groups of images suggest that they were either created by others or she shared duplicate copies of her own images with others.
Arrangement
Photograph materials have been arranged into 4 series according to their format and their order at the time of donation. Allen's original titles have been retained where possible; information supplied by SCA is indicated with brackets [ ].

Slides in Series 1 are grouped into files based on Allen's organization of her slides at the time of donation. Call numbers correspond to numbers from Allen's labels. NAU.PH.2009.5.101 corresponds to a slide box that Allen labeled "101," and so on. Titles are original, unless indicated otherwise in brackets [ ].

Series 3: Supplemental petroglyph, petrograph, and scenic slides, undated (6,982 35mm slides)
Scope & Content
The slides in Series 3 were added to the Mary K. Allen Papers in 2015. The subjects are very largely rock art of Arizona and Utah, with many scenic photographs in addition.
Arrangement
Slides in Series 3 are arranged into 12 subseries to reflect the 12 metal boxes that Mary K. Allen used to organize her slides. NAU.PH.2009.5.1 corresponds to the slides originally housed in the first metal box, NAU.PH.2009.5.2 the second, and so on. File titles within each subseries are based on notes provided by Allen at the time of donation.
