Steve Dudley was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1951 to Dorothy and Alfred Dudley. He attended Brentwood High School in Pittsburgh. After graduating, Dudley worked as a naturalist at Todd Nature Reserve in Butler County, Pennsylvania, before enlisting in the United States Air Force to serve in the Vietnam War.
While serving in the Air Force, Dudley was trained in fire suppression and crash rescue. He was stationed on the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. While stationed there, he completed college courses in biology.
Dudley was later stationed at the Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix, Arizona. In the 2.5 years at Luke, Dudley completed his liberal studies education at Glendale Community College. He then met his wife, Meri.
After his discharge from the Air Force in 1974, Dudley and Meri moved to Flagstaff to attend Northern Arizona Univeristy (NAU), where Dudley took classes in forestry and biological sciences.
In 1975, Dudley was hired as a seasonal United States Forest Service (USFS) worker for the North Kaibab Ranger District. He worked at the Big Springs Field Station and then at Jacob Lake in 1976.
In 1977, Dudley worked in the Mormon Lake Ranger District of Coconino National Forest as an engine crewmember on Engine 5-44, stationed in Munds Park. He worked there for several seasons before being promoted as an Engine Captain, then known as a Tank Truck Operator (TTO).
Dudley graduated cum laude from NAU in 1981 with degrees in Applied Plant Science and Entomology. He continued to work for the USFS. By 1987 Dudley was managing multiple field stations in Coconino County.
In 1988, Dudley was promoted to District Engine Supervisor, responsible for all engines and guard stations in the Mormon Lake District. In 1989, he was appointed to the Region 3 Engine Committee, and became its chairman in 1990.
Dudley was promoted to Mormon Lake Ranger District Assistant Fire Management Officer/Fuels Management in 1990. He was an Incident Command System (ICS) certified Situation Unit Leader. After being selected as the hydraulics specialist for Coconino National Forest's Type 2 team, he became an ICS qualified Type II Incident Commander.
Dudley retired from active fire fighting in 1999 at the age of 55. He was then hired in R3 Forest Health and assigned to the Zone Office in Flagstaff where he began in the Aerial Detection Survey program, which collects and reports data on forest health. He worked as the Spatial Data Analyst for the Arizona Zone Office of Forest Health from 2005 to the end of his career in 2014.
Dudley resides in Williams, Arizona, as of 2025.
