Joseph "Joe" L. Dudziak was born on August 30, 1912. Not much is known about his early life, though Dudziak did live in Arizona for some period of time. He spent the bulk of his career working in port operations. Between 1952 and 1967, Dudziak served as Operating Manager for the Parr-Richmond Terminal Company in Richmond, California, before becoming vice president in charge of sales, traffic, and cost studies for Parr-Richmond. Dudziak then became manager of sales and operations for Benicia Port Terminal company. He also worked for Luckenbach Steamship Co. and N.Y.K. Line.
Whenever he had the opportunity, Dudziak would visit the Southwest. Beginning in the late 1930s, he explored Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico by car and Jeep, as well as taking many hiking and river rafting trips. Dudziak soon joined the Honorable Order of Canyoneers "Colorado River Rats" with Mexican Hat Expeditions, as the 156th individual to run Grand Canyon's Colorado River. Most of his major expeditions were in the 1950s, before the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam; regular companions included Kent Frost, Frank Wright, Tad Nichols, Katie Lee, and Dock Marston, among others. Dudziak photographed, documented, and filmed these trips, exchanging photographs and film material with other river runners. He presented his slides locally in California to interested audiences.
Dudziak passed away on November 27, 1992.
Information provided in this biographical note is based on collection materials, notably a December 16, 1952 article in the Richmond Independent titled "Terminal Manager is Proud of His 'River Rat' Record" found in the Biographical Information file, as well as donor-supplied materials, such as an article titled "Joe Dudziak in Benicia Port Post" [newspaper unknown].
The Joseph Dudziak collection contains a comprehensive selection of photographic images (nearly 6000) from Dudziak's travels over a 30+ year period, as well as maps, journals, and correspondence all relevant to his river running career. The journals provide detailed accounts of many of Dudziak's expeditions between the years of 1939 and 1977. Correspondence details Dudziak's interactions with friends, family, and fellow River Rats, particularly those in California. Moving image materials depict fishing trips, river running expeditions, and jeep trips across the Four Corners area.
Processed manuscript (NAU.MS.414) and photographic materials (NAU.PH.2009.14) are fully available for access and use.
Due to a lack of required playback equipment and the fragility of the materials in question, all 8mm films in the Joseph Dudziak collection (NAU.MI.2013.06) are unavailable for access and use in the Miriam Lemont Reading Room. Researchers are advised to utilize digitized versions of the original films available online via the Colorado Plateau Digital Collections. Please see the Digital Material Available note to learn more.

Thomas L. Dudziak (Joseph's brother) donated photographs and manuscript materials in 2009.
Joanne Gabel (Joseph's sister) donated 8mm and 16mm films in 2013. Gabel donated additional correspondence (Accession 2021.08) in 2021.
Richard Quartaroli inventoried Accession 2009.14, the basis of the Joseph Dudziak collection, in March 2009. Photographs and manuscript materials were then processed in April of 2012 by intern Ashley Goodman, under the supervision of Jonathan Pringle.
Sam(antha) Meier inventoried moving image materials (NAU.MI.2013.06) and processed additional manuscript materials (now found in Series 5: Correspondence of the manuscripts group, NAU.MS.414) from Accession 2021.08 in July 2021.
In 2021, Sam(antha) Meier inventoried moving image materials from the Joseph Dudziak collection and selected them for inclusion in SCA's National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant project to address at-risk moving images. Olivia "Liv" Hall did additional processing work (including assigning call numbers and labeling) for these materials. Hall then digitized, edited, and uploaded copies of the moving images to the Colorado Plateau Digital Collections in 2022. In June 2023, Mendy added item-level links to the digitized moving images across the finding aid and updated descriptive notes.
Karen Underhill appraised materials from the Joseph Dudziak collection in 2009, retaining only materials related to the Colorado Plateau and Dudziak's experiences rafting the Colorado River.
Future accruals are anticipated.
