Biographical Note
James H. "Stretch" Fretwell was born on June 5, 1928 in Connecticut. Originally, Fretwell
moved to the Southwest as a treatment for asthma. Upon recieving his B.S. in Industrial
Engineering in 1946 from the University of New Mexico, he started work at the Los Alamos
National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico in 1948 as a civil engineer and eventually as
a cryogenic engineer, retiring from the Lab in 1990. For the next six years, he served on
the Los Alamos County Council.
While living in Los Alamos, Fretwell became a scout leader for Explorer Post 20, sponsored
by the local Kiwanis Club as part of the Boy Scouts of America. The troop specialized in
river running; scouts would practice rafting on the Rio Grande, then take one major trip
each year. In addition, Fretwell enjoyed exploring archaeological sites and scenic areas in
the Four Corners region, which he photographed in detail.
Fretwell and his wife Melanie, a German immigrant to the United States, met in Manhattan
Beach, California. The Fretwells raised two sons, Bruce and Kirk Fretwell. Following Stretch
Fretwell's retirement from Los Alamos National Lab, the couple moved to Anna Maria Island,
Florida. Melanie Fretwell died June 25, 2014.
Information in this biographical note was provided by the donor as
well as based on a July 9, 2014 obituary for Melanie
Fretwell in The Islander.
Scope and Content
Moving images in the Stretch Fretwell collection (NAU.MI.98.6) includes original footage
created by Stretch Fretwell and Paul Allison of Explorer Post 20, including silent footage
of 1961 San Juan River trip through Glen Canyon with Explorer Post 20 of Los Alamos, New
Mexico and silent footage of a 1968 rafting trip on the Dolores River in Colorado, from
Bedrock, Colorado to the Colorado River, with Fretwell and Explorer Post 20 of Los Alamos,
New Mexico.
Additional materials consist of videotapes created using Fretwell and Allison's original
footage and other river trip footage; Fretwell and Allison narrated and added music to these
derivative films. These films depict Explorer Post 20 river trips in Cataract Canyon
(Colorado River), on the Green River, the Salmon River, the middle fork of the Salmon River,
the Colorado River, the Snake River, Hell's Canyon (Snake River), water in the Westwater
Canyon, and the Dolores River.
The moving images also include aerial footage of ruins south of Santa Fe, New Mexico near
Lamy, New Mexico, including locations identifed by SCA staff in 2000 as Pueblo Shey, Pueblo
Colorado, Pueblo Largo, San Cristobal, Pueblo Blanco (west end of dike), San Lazaro, and San
Marcos (near the pen).
Photographs in the Stretch Fretwell collection (NAU.PH.98.6) include images of Truches, New
Mexico, the Sangre de Christo Mountains, Mesa Verde, Yellowstone, Hoverweep, ruins near Los
Alamos, New Mexico, Chaco Canyon, the San Juan River, the Colorado River, Rainbow Bridge,
Inscription House, Monument Valley, Bluff, Utah, Mexican Hat, Utah, Canyon de Chelly, Glen
Canyon from Hite Ferry to Lees Ferry, the Grand Canyon, the Salmon River, the Green River,
Gray Canyon, Desolation Canyon, and Cataract Canyon.
Map materials in the Stretch Fretwell collection (NAU.MS.44.map.1247) include annotated
copies of a map titled Plan and profile of Colorado River, Lees Ferry, Arizona to Mouth of
Green River, Utah; San Juan River Mouth to Chinle Creek Utah and Certain Tributaries, sheets
A-P.
Arrangement
SCA staff, including Diane Grua, Bee Valvo, Cindy Summers, and Sam Meier, arranged
materials in the Stretch Fretwell collection into 3 format-based record groups:
Due to a lack of required playback equipment and the fragility of the materials in
question, all 16mm films in the moving images portion of the Stretch Fretwell collection
(NAU.MI.98.6) are unavailable for access and use in the Miriam Lemont Reading Room.
Researchers interested in any 16mm films which have yet to be digitized by SCA should
contact the department to learn more.

Phillips, and Samantha Meier, digitized moving image materials from the Stretch Fretwell
collection (NAU.MI.98.6) in winter 2021. SCA staff previously digitized photographs and maps
from the Stretch Fretwell collection in the late 1990s or early 2000s.

Acquisition Information
Materials in the Stretch Fretwell collection were donated to Cline Library Special
Collections and Archives by James H. "Stretch" Fretwell in 1998. VHS tapes co-created by
Fretwell and Paul Allison were purchased from Bob Emigh by SCA in 1997.
Processing Information
Diane Grua (Boyer) processed photographic materials in the Stretch Fretwell collection
(NAU.PH.98.6) in 1999.
In 2003, Bee Valvo assigned VHS videotapes in Stretch Fretwell collection call numbers
NAU.MI.96.6.1-9 and included the materials in a finding aid for the collection first
produced by Diane Grua (Boyer) in 1999.
At an unknown later date, these VHS videotapes were separated from other archival materials
in the Stretch Fretwell collection, moved to Special Collections Media, and catalogued by
Cline Library staff. The videotapes appear to have been removed from the Stretch Fretwell
collection finding aid at this point.
In 2004, the 16mm films and 1 VHS videotape (the aerials film) in the Stretch Fretwell
collection were added to an EAD 1 version of the finding aid by Melanie Gerton, who assigned
the 16mm films and 1 VHS videotape call numbers NAU.MI.98.6.1-3.
In 2021, Olivia (Liv) Hall re-inventoried the catalogued VHS videotapes as part of a
National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant project. Samantha (Sam) Meier re-assigned
all moving images in the Stretch Fretwell collection the base call number NAU.MI.98.6,
leaving NAU.MI.98.6.1-3 as assigned, and re-integrated the previously catalogued VHS
videotapes into the finding aid for the collection. Hall and SCA staff digitized 16mm film
and VHS tapes from the Stretch Fretwell collection with support from NEH.
Also in 2021, as part of a map redescription/reorganization project, Cindy Summers
discovered 415 slides, 2 prints and 6 negatives that had not been included in the previous
guide. These items were added to the photographic portion of the collection under call
numbers NAU.PH.98.6.495-917.
Moving images in the Stretch Fretwell collection (NAU.MI.98.6) includes original
footage created by Stretch Fretwell and Paul Allison using a hand-wound Bolex camera and
Kodachrome film, including silent footage of 1961 San Juan River trip through Glen
Canyon with Explorer Post 20 of Los Alamos, New Mexico and silent footage of a 1968
rafting trip on the Dolores River in Colorado, from Bedrock, Colorado to the Colorado
River, with Fretwell and Explorer Post 20 of Los Alamos, New Mexico.
Additional materials consist of videotapes created using Fretwell and Allison's
original footage and other river trip footage, transferred to VHS by Dale Holm of
HolmMade Art of Los Alamos in 1997; Fretwell and Allison narrated and added music to
these derivative films. These films depict Explorer Post 20 river trips in Cataract
Canyon (Colorado River), on the Green River, the Salmon River, the middle fork of the
Salmon River, the Colorado River, the Snake River, Hell's Canyon (Snake River), water in
the Westwater Canyon, and the Dolores River.
The moving images also include aerial footage of ruins south of Santa Fe, New Mexico
near Lamy, New Mexico, including locations identifed by SCA staff in 2000 as Pueblo
Shey, Pueblo Colorado, Pueblo Largo, San Cristobal, Pueblo Blanco (west end of dike),
San Lazaro, and San Marcos (near the pen).
