AbstractThe Grand Canyon River Guides Collection contains the archives of this river guiding association. In addition to the organizational records, the collection also houses material related to issues impacting the Grand Canyon and river guiding -- environmental, management, and guide certificaiton. The collection also documents the annual guides training seminar. Material is added on an annual basis.

Historical Note

The Grand Canyon River Guides (GCRG) association was organized on June 15, 1988. GCRG was founded by a group of interested river guides dedicated to preserving the quality of the Grand Canyon and the river experience, with Kenton Grua the first president. The organization is made up of professional river guides and others interested in the Canyon.

During 1988 the guides selected a board of directors and developed articles of incorporation and bylaws. GCRG began work on such issues as the Glen Canyon Environmental Studies, the new Colorado River Management Plan, and guide certification and training. GCRG also corresponds and works with the National Park Service and outfitters on concerns and improvements for the Canyon and the River.

In 1989 GCRG began to began to take an even more active role in their dedication to river trip quality. GCRC assumed coordination of the annual Guides Training Seminar. GCRG also tackled other issues and concerns such as alcohol, concessions, entrance fees, Grand Canyon Courtesy Brochures and articles, recycling, waste management, and law enforcement. The organization continues to address current issues on an ongoing basis.


Scope and Content Note

The Grand Canyon River Guides Collection pertains to guided river expeditions in the Grand Canyon and various other issues of interest to the organization's members. GCRG Activities and Issues are centered in northern Arizona and Utah. The majority of the collection consists of GCRG subject files, minutes of meetings, financial reports, and general correspondence.

This collection is added to on continual basis.

The photograph collection contains contains photographs from various groups and trips through the Grand Canyon.

A meeting of river runners, scientists, and concerned parties including Katie Lee, Larry Stevens, Dave Wegner, and Kenton Grua meet to discuss Glen Canyon Dam. Topics covered include the effect of the dam on riverine ecosystems, biodiversity, endangered species, and support for taking down the dam. In contrast, issues are raised that point to the difficulty of taking down the dam; these include the political framework, the regional environmental management (referring to the "bird sanctuary" of the dam region), and the difficulties of the actual restoration process.
