Biographical Note

Kenton E. Grua was born July 25, 1950 in Utah. He had two brothers, Corey and Cliff Grua. His family moved from Salt Lake City to Vernal, Utah around when Kenton Grua was 12 years old. For his 12th birthday, his father gave him the gift of a river trip led by Shorty Burton down the Yampa River to the Green River through Lodore Canyon, ending in Dinosaur National Monument. Soon after, Grua's father bought a ten-man raft and outfitted it with oar locks. As a teenager, Grua took the raft on his own river trips.

After completing a quarter at the University of Utah, Grua asked Ted Hatch of Hatch River Expeditions for a job as a boatman. Hatch agreed, and Grua quit college to begin working for Hatch River Expeditions around 1968 or 1969. Grua completed his first guide trip in the Grand Canyon in March 1969. After two years with Hatch, Grua went on to work for Ron Smith of Grand Canyon Expeditions running motor boat river trips for two years.

In 1973, Grua decided to attempt to hike the entirety of the Grand Canyon, inspired by Colin Fletcher's 1967 book, The Man Who Walked Through Time. However, a foot injury and subsequent infection prevented Grua from completing the thru-hike.

Grua went to work for Martin Litton and the river rafting company Litton founded, Grand Canyon Dories, in 1973. The same year, he met Ellen Tibbetts and began spending time in Flagstaff, Arizona with Tibbetts. In 1976, he decided to re-attempt the Grand Canyon thru-hike and started placing food caches along his route and seeking advice from George Billingsley. Grua started the second thru-hike with Bart Henderson, who came along as a photographer for the first part of the hike, in February of 1976. Tibbetts accompanied Grua from Hermit's Rest to Havasu Creek. In total, he hiked from Lees Ferry to the Grand Wash Cliffs, approximately 600 miles on foot, over 36 days.

In 1980, Grua and fellow boatmen Wally Rist and Rudi Petschek completed a non-motorized "speed run" of the Grand Canyon, rowing the length of the Canyon in a dory named the Emerald Mile in just under 48 hours. However, Grua is perhaps best known for his 1983 Grand Canyon dory ¨speed run¨ (also in the Emerald Mile) with Petschek and Steve "Wren" Reynolds, in just 36 hours and 38 minutes. Grua, Petschek, and Reynolds completed their illegal river trip (not permitted by the National Park Service) during a historically high flow rate of 72,000 cubic feet per second (CFS) following heavy rain and snowfall due to El Nino as well as flooding across the Western United States and a partial failure of the Glen Canyon Dam.

In 1987, Grua and Mike Taggett called a meeting in Flagstaff to found Grand Canyon River Guides (GCRG), a non-profit organization for river guides and travelers which works to preserve, protect, and defend the Grand Canyon. GCRG publishes a quarterly journal, The Boatman's Quarterly Review, runs annual guide training seminars, and preserves oral history interviews the river runners.

Grua married and divorced several times, including marriages with Denice Napoletano in the mid to late 1980s, Diane Boyer (Grua) in the early 1990s, and Michelle Starr Grua.

Kenton Grua died August 25, 2002 from a spontaneous aortic dissection while mountain biking outside Flagstaff, Arizona.

Information provided in this biographical note is based upon oral histories with Kenton Grua conducted by Lew (Lewis) Steiger now found in the Grand Canyon River Guides [GCRG] Collection at Cline Library Special Collections and Archives (NAU.OH.53) as well as an August 26, 2002 obituary for Kenton Grua in the Arizona Daily Sun.

Processing Information

An unknown SCA staff member processed photographs in the Kenton Grua papers in 1998.

Austin Rignes created an initial Encoded Archival Description finding aid for these photographic materials based upon previous processing in 2012.

Peter Runge inventoried materials in Accession 2021.22 of the Kenton Grua papers at the box level in October 2021. Samantha Meier updated the finding aid to include Accession 2021.22 in January 2022.

Erin Carter incorporated box-file inventory information for manuscript and photographic materials for Accession 2021.22 in July 2024.
