Biographical Note
Laura Purtymun McBride, born in 1910 at Red Rock, Arizsona, was a descendant of the
pioneer families of John James (J.J.) Thompson, Jessie Jefferson (Bear) Howard, and
Stephen Purtymun. Well known for her long involvement with the Sedona Historical
Society, she authored a fictionalized look at early settlement in the Verde Valley
titled "Travelling by Tin Lizzie." Laura resided in Oak Creek Canyon until her death
in 1994.
Scope and Content
The collection documents the early pioneer families of John James (J.J.) Thompson,
Jessie Jefferson (Bear) Howard, and Stephen Purtymun in Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona,
Arizona. Although this collection is primarily composed of family portraits and
homesteads, also included are photographs taken at 4th of July and Easter picnics,
area schools, a view of Cottonwodd, and logging operations near Flagstaff.
No restrictions on use, except: not available through interlibrary loan.
