Biographical Note
Powell, John Wesley (1834-1902), American ethnologist, geologist, explorer, and
government administrator, known for his work as the first major classifier of Native
American languages, as well as for his pioneering work as a geographical and geological
surveyor of the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon, and the Rocky Mountains.
Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of copies of 71 images of and about John Wesley Powell,
obtained mostly from U.S. Geological Survey photograph collections, for Cline Library
display purposes. The images are of: Powell, his family, and associates; Native
Americans from his role of ethnographer; the exploration of the Green and Colorado
Rivers and surrounding lands; maps of his river route and geographic area; illustrations
from his 1895 Canyons of the Colorado; and 1968 repeat
photography (photo matches) of some of Powell and his photographers's views, by Hal G.
Stephens and Eugene M. Shoemaker, published as In the Footsteps of
John Wesley Powell: An Album of Comparative Photographs of the Green and Colorado
Rivers, 1871-72 and 1968.

R. Davis." It is likely that John Wesley Powell, a 26-year-old Artillery
Captain, appeared in the illustration by accident. Although Powell had lost his
right arm at the Battle of Shiloh (April 6-7, 1862), he is shown here
