Biographical Note

Alta Vista Garden Club was organized and became a Federated Garden Club starting in 1951. The Club was initially started in order to stimulate interest in and knowledge of the different forms of gardening - predominantly regarding private gardens and general improvement of home grounds - to aid in the protection of native trees, plants and wildlife and to promote general civic improvements in the City of Prescott. The Club limits its membership to thirty-five members, who over the years have contributed thousands of dollars and hours towards projects to enhance and beautify Prescott.

Some of these projects include the Sharlot Hall Museum Rose Garden, landscaping at Love Field, Acker Park, Miller Valley School, Yavapai County complex at the rodeo grounds, the pond of the Yavapai Regional Medical Center, Yavapai Guidance Center, Prescott Fine Arts Association Gardens, Yavapai College Sculpture Gardens, Heritage Park Zoo and the YMCA building. Also, the Club has planted trees at every public school in the Prescott area as well as the Salvation Army Worship Center, the VA Hospital, Memorial Park, and the Pioneer Home. Moreover, the Club has planted specimen trees along Haisley Road to promote the use of Sunburst Locust, have provided plants and gardening advice to new Habitat for Humanity homeowners and have donated books about gardening, horticulture and flower arranging to the Prescott community.

In addition, club member Mildred Lee initiated Operation Wildflower, Lady Bird Johnson’s national roadway beautification program, in Arizona and the club continued their donations of wildflower seeds to the Arizona Department of Transportation for many years. Furthermore, in the past the Club has sponsored Prescott Home Garden Tours. All these projects are made possible by the fundraising activities sponsored by the Alta Vista Garden Club.

Administrative Information

Custodial History

The collection of three scrapbooks was donated to Sharlot Hall Museum in 2000 by the Alta Vista Garden Club member Agnes Daniels and Frances Martinez and was assigned accession number 2000.053. The scrapbooks were processed and placed into a non-standardized arrangement and organization scheme and were originally cataloged in Document Box 467. Apparently, no finding aid was created for this document box. The collection was re-processed using a DACS compliant finding aid and was re-assigned a new manuscript number, SHM MS-36, in March 2014.

Accruals: Frances Martinez, a past Club member, donated an accrual on April 4, 2014 (Accession #2014.046). This club is still active and there may be accruals by former or current club members in the future.
