Biographical Note
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) was founded in the United States in 1881,
and aimed to advance “equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.”
Throughout it’s time, the national AAUW has advocated for public policy, organized conferences
and community programs, and spearheaded voter education campaigns. Additionally, they raise funds
for fellowships, grants, awards, and legal advocacy.
The organization was first introduced in Arizona in 1946. The focus for the association was to bring
together university-educated women to promote education in American life. On March 12, 1949, twenty-two
women met at the home of Mrs. W. J. Oliver to organize a branch of the AAUW in Prescott. The meeting and
tea included Mildred B. Sagre, Dean of Women at Arizona State College in Tempe and the state AAUW president.
Mrs. Al Kulhane was elected president of the new branch and a by-laws committee was appointed.
