Judd (December 7, 1907 - January 3, 1998) was born in Fredonia, Territory of Arizona. He was raised in Fredonia, and later attended Dixie College in St. George, Utah, for a two-year certificate in teaching. He later taught in Fredonia for seven years. Abia then attended Northern Arizona Teachers College in Flagstaff, Arizona, to obtain his four-year teaching certificate. After graduating in 1936, he moved to Prescott, Arizona, to teach at Lincoln and Miller Valley Elementary Schools. In 1942 Abia interrupted his teaching to join the Army in World War II. After the war, he took a leave of absence from teaching to obtain a master’s degree in education. Upon returning to Prescott he was appointed principal of Washington Elementary School where he remained for five years. In 1953, Abia became superintendent of the Prescott Unified School District, a position he held for twenty-two years until his retirement in 1973. When a new elementary school opened in Prescott in 1989, he was honored for his decades of service by naming the school for him. Abia Judd died January 3, 1998, in Prescott, Arizona. Scope and ContentThe collection contains five series of records. Series one contains school records from his work as an educator and County superintendent of schools. Series two is his military records from his service in the Air Force including discharge papers, letters, etc. Series three contains personal records such as photographs and awards. Series four has information about his civic activities and religious groups. Series five includes materials from his father, Asa Judd, and his wife, Grace Heaton Judd. A previous finding aid was created in 2005 and 2010, and is available upon request. The Abia Judd Papers was donated to the Sharlot Hall Museum Library & Archives by Terry Robertson in 2004. An accrual was donated by Robertson in 2005. The collection was given the accession number 2005.009. On March 11, 2010, the following items were deaccessioned from the collection because the published material is unrelated to the Sharlot Hall Museum mission: Principles of the Gospel, The Book of Mormon, Handbook for Scoutmasters, The “How” Book of Scouting, Scouting in the LDS Church, Science for Children, and Everyday Foods.
