An annual carnival was held in Guaymas beginning in 1888. Introduced by European residents, participation in the carnival was originally limited to the upper classes. In 1890, Guaymas, an industrial port city, had a population of about 10,000 residents. It continues to host one of Mexico's oldest carnival celebrations.
