Biographical Note

Bessie Barkley (1893-1980) grew up in New York (State?) and attended Albany College. She became a reporter for the Washington Herald and was eventually appointed editor of Unity Magazine. Barkley married John Lee Loveless (1886-1974) in 1928 and the couple settled in Chandler, Arizona. Writing under the pen name of Leland Lovelace, Bessie Loveless published Lost Mines and Hidden Treasures in 1956.

The Leland Lovelace Papers include correspondence, newsclippings, printed matter, and unpublished manuscripts. The majority these materials document Lovelace's research on lost mines and buried treasure in the Superstition Mountain region.
