Biographical Note
John Alexander Rockfellow was born to Samuel Lodaski and Julia Lucinda (Conkey) Rockfellow in Mount Morris, New York on January 30, 1858. He became interested in the Western United States after explorer Major William Powell visited his home in Rochester, New York. After graduating from the University of Rochester in 1879, Rockfellow and his school friend Bill Hartt traveled to the interior of Arizona, where they prospected for gold. Rockfellow lived in Arizona for most of the rest of his life, establishing himself as a miner, ranchman, cattleman, educator, and civil engineer. He died at his son's home in Los Angeles, California on May 16, 1947.
Rockfellow married Flora Amelia McNair (1857-1937) in 1890 and the couple had four children: Hugh McNair (1891-1891), Julia (Rockfellow) Waite (1893-1991), Henrietta Pierpont (Rockfellow) Rubel (1897-1989), and John Philip (1898-1964).
