Biographical Note

Norman Davies Nevills was born in April, 1908 to William Eugene and Mae Davies Nevills of California. In 1921, William left his family to seek his fortune drilling for oil in Utah, where he became fascinated by rivers. In 1924 he took an open boat trip down the San Juan River. Mae joined her husband in Utah in 1925 while Norm stayed in California to complete his education, attending the College of the Pacific in Stockton for two years before joining his parents in Mexican Hat, Utah in 1927. William's river adventures greatly influenced his son, who wanted to run the river himself. Norm Nevills met Doris Drown in July of 1933 in Monticello, Utah and they married in October 1933. For their honeymoon they planned a trip down the San Juan River. Nevills built a homemade boat out of his mother's horse trough and they traveled the river in 1934 with few problems. The trip fanned Nevills' desire to guide paying customers down the river.

In 1938, Nevills made a complete run of the Colorado River from Green River, Utah, through Cataract and Grand Canyons, to Boulder Dam. The publicity generated by this trip created other commercial opportunities. Dr. Elzada Clover, a University of Michigan botanist, wanted to make a river trip to catalog the flora of the Grand Canyon. Dr. Clover brought graduate student Lois Jotter as her assistant. The trip began in July of 1938, lasted for 43 days, and brought Nevills additional publicity for another successful run accompanied by the first women to make the trip. Nevills Expedition made many runs of the San Juan and Colorado Rivers, including six more of the Grand Canyon, with his wife Doris and their daughters, Joan and Sandra, often accompanying him. To ease transportation problems he sometimes faced on the river, Nevills bought his first airplane in 1946. When Doris' uncle died in 1949, Norm and Doris Nevills took off from Mexican Ha, Utah, destined for Sacramento, California. Right after take off the plane's engine died and the plane crashed, killing both Norm and Doris. Nevills Expedition was sold to J. Frank Wright and Jim Rigg, two of Norm Nevills' boatmen, and renamed Mexican Hat Expeditions. In 1950, family, friends, and fellow river runners gathered to dedicate a plaque honoring Norm and Doris Nevills at Navajo Bridge, Marble Canyon.

Scope and Content Note

The Norm Nevills Papers consists of Norm Nevills' river trip journals, Doris Nevills' diary, miscellaneous typed and handwritten correspondence and photographs of Norm, Doris, Sandra, and Joan Nevills from the 1930's to the 1990's, magazine articles and newspaper clippings. Series 1, box 1, contains Norm's river journal, Doris' diary, Frank Wright's diary, and miscellaneous documents. Note the river diaries are copies of typescripts created from the originals by the University of Utah's Special Collection department, with the exception of the Doris Nevills' diary which is a photocopy of the original. Series 2 contains the correspondence of the Nevills family. Included are letters from Sandra Nevills, Netie Redman, and Gaylord Staveley. Series 3 contains other correspondence, Nevills family records, and newspaper articles. Series 4 contains newspaper and magazine articles on the Nevills family and other persons associated with river running or the four corners region. Of interest is the story of the restoration of the cataract boat Sandra.

The photographs show Norm and Doris Nevills with family members, as well as various river trips, and the people that went on those trips. Also shown is Norm Nevills on the famous 1938 river trip with Elzada Clover and Lois Jotter Cutter. The Nevills Lodge at Mexican Hat, Utah is also included.

The 2006 addition of the Norm Nevills Papers consists of Norm Nevills river trip journals as well as many by other authors, one letter of correspondence, many items pertaining to the history of Norm Nevills, including genealogical records, as well as a few newspaper and magazine articles. Series 1, box 1, contains river journals by Norm Nevills and others, as well as various river documents. The river journals are almost exclusively photocopies of the typescripts with a few exceptions. Series 2 contains correspondence, which includes one letter addressed to T.L. Mayes from Norm Nevills. Series 3 contains other correspondence, records, and articles pertaining to the history and genealogy of Norm Nevills and his wife, Doris Drown. Series 4 contains a few newspaper and magazine articles on Norm Nevills, the famous 1938 expedition with Dr. Elzada Clover, and the restoration of the cataract boat Sandra.

The unprocessed accession to the Papers (Accession 2019.58) consists of 1 2" 3-ring binder of photographs documenting the activities of Norm Nevills as a river runner on the Colorado River and exploring the southwest corner of the Colorado Plateau between 1930 and 1942. Areas identified in the photographs include the San Juan River, Colorado River, Grand Canyon, Glen Canyon, Monument Valley, and the Salmon and Snake Rivers in Utah. Many of the photographs were created by others and assembled by Nevills.
