Biographical Note
The Flagstaff Women's Club was formed and federated in 1914 through the International
General Federation of Women's Clubs. The initial membership is listed as being
ninety-eight active members and eleven associate members, who participated in four
divisions of the organization including, household economics, music and drama, art and
literature, as well as civics and education. One of the initial projects of the Women's
Club was to support the development of the Flagstaff Public Library. To this end, the
organization ran a public library at their headquarters until 1921, when they donated
the facility along with 3,461 books to the City of Flagstaff.
From its inception the organization has been involved in supporting a variety of
charitable and civic projects including: the student loan fund; defense support and Red
Cross work, 1917-1918 and 1940-1945; clean-up campaigns; Boy and Girl Scout
organizations; the Community Chautauqua; Fourth of July floats; Memorial Day programs;
All-State dinners, ca.1928; Trade at Home week; and contributing donations to Arizona
Children's Home and Crippled Children's Aid. The General Federation of Women's Clubs
began in the 1890s. The Arizona divisions have a long tradition of involvement with the
international organization including one member, Jerri Wagner, of Prescott, Arizona, who
served as president of the parent organization.
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains approximately 2.5 linear feet of materials including
correspondence, Women's Club minutes, financial ledgers, and scrape books of newspaper
clippings related to the organization's activities. The collection is primarily an
administrative collection that would be best used for data collection regarding
charitable activities of this women's organization. It would also be useful in following
the activities of local women who are listed in the membership roles.
