Miner R. Tillotson was born in Indiana and attended Northwestern University in Illinois in 1904. In 1908 he graduated from Purdue University with a degree in civil engineering. After college he worked with the Forest Service and later as a construction engineer with the Standard Oil Company until 1920. In that year Tillotson became the resident engineer at Grand Canyon National Park. In 1922 he became superintendent of park and held that position until 1938 when he was appointed director of Region 1 of the Park Service and moved to Richmond, VA. In 1940 he was again transferred within the Park Service to Region 3 with headquarters in Santa Fe, NM. Tillotson died in Santa Fe on February 28, 1955.
This collection consists of personal papers, correspondence, manuscripts, and photographs collected by Miner R. Tillotson during his work at Grand Canyon National Park and with the National Park Service from 1939 to 1955. Of special note to researchers are the numerous manuscripts on Grand Canyon National Park and Park Service history prepared by Tillotson and other authors as well as a draft manuscript by Tillotson later published as “Grand Canyon Country.” Photographs show Tillotson, park rangers, airplanes and visitors at Grand Canyon Airport, social gatherings, and award presentations. Unfortunately most images are unlabeled in the collection.
