Historical Note
The Greater Arizona Collection has been an integral part of the Arizona State University Library for many years. Although no official beginning date exists, the origin of the present collection can be traced back to 1917, when Thomas J. Cookson, the College Librarian, began building a small Southwestern Collection. In 1943, the primary focus shifted to materials about Arizona.
The Greater Arizona Collection has changed considerably in size and scope since those times. In 1985, the Collection became part of the Department of Archives and Special Collections.
The Greater Arizona Collection contains materials in all formats. Its strengths include over 8,000 linear feet of manuscripts and personal papers; oral histories; a book collection of over 30,000 titles; and more than 500,000 photographic prints and negatives.
Scope and Content Note
The Accession Records of the Greater Arizona Collection contain brief descriptions of unprocessed collections about the history of Arizona and the Southwest. The records document Arizona as a territory and state including manuscripts, personal and professional papers, and records of various organizations that have had a lasting impact on Arizona.
This collection has not been processed in full and requires curatorial approval to view. To request access to specific collection materials please contact Ask An Archivist.
Arrangement
Each record contains a brief title, an Accession Number, which is constructed by the year the materials were required, followed by the sequential order in which they were received (example: 1999-01234). In the case of multiple accessions for one collection, a records will contain multiple accession numbers. Following the accession number is a brief description of the record which include the inclusive dates of the materials and the extent of the materials by linear feet.
