Biographical Note

Ernest Mayer Clayton was born to James F. Clayton (1841-1935) and Sarah Frances (Biddell) Clayton (1851-1947) on July 8, 1883 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. The family moved to Idaho Springs, Colorado in the 1890s. Ernest Clayton graduated from Idaho Springs High School in 1903 and went on to attend the University of Colorado. He married Marie "Mayme" Hardee King (1885-1972) in Denver, Colorado on June 2, 1909 and the couple had four children: Virginia (Clayton) Reynolds Marmaduke Nigro (1910-2003), Edith (Clayton) Knisely (1912-2010), John Clifford (1918-1942), and Mary Hardee (Clayton) Clough (1922-1998). Ernest Clayton worked as an electrician in Miami (Arizona), Globe (Arizona), Leadville (Colorado), and Denver (Colorado) before settling in Douglas, Wyoming, where he owned Clayton Electric. He died in Douglas on May 7, 1958.


Scope and Content Note

The Ernest M. Clayton Photographs, 1902-1915, document the construction of buildings at the Inspiration Mill, the International Smelter, and the Miami Power Plant in Miami, Arizona. The images were made by Clayton, an electrician who worked on these construction projects. Each plate measures 3" x 4".

This collection consists of forty glass plate negatives.

Administrative Information

Custodial History

Clayton gave these glass plates to Mr. W. C. Lindmier Jr. when they were both living in Douglas, Wyoming. Lindmier then gave the plates to Dr. Harold Fry, Associate Professor Emeritus, Mechanical Engineering, at Arizona State University. Dr. Fry, with the consent of Mr. Lindmier, presented the plates to the Arizona Collection on September 8, 1983.

Processing Note

The glass plate negatives are arranged according to construction site, when known, and numbered sequentially 1 through 40. The titles are taken directly from the negatives.
