Abstract: | This collection houses 218 photographs collected by J. F. Crampton depicting central and southern Arizona (primarily Globe) and its residents. Views include street scenes, mines (including the Copper Hill Mine and the Old Dominion Mine) and miners, railroad workers, the first train to reach Globe, a train wreck, and the Stanwix and Gila Bend depots. People depicted include the Higdon family, students of the Old Adobe and Central schools, local personalities, and Apache people. Landscape views include Globe, Roosevelt Dam, Coolidge Dam, the ruins of Mill City, Maricopa Wells, Fort McDowell, Devil's Canyon Trail, Fish Creek, and the Apache Trail. |

Sammy Norah Nadine Higdon was born to Hugh Leonard Higdon (1861-1910) and Olive Frances (Tidwell) Higdon (1866-1910) in Globe, Arizona on January 15, 1901. She was the youngest of six children, including Joseph Leonard (1892-1933), Joyce K. (Higdon) Vincent (1893-1962), Louis Edgar (1895-1918), Hester (1897-1897), and Doris H. (Higdon) McPhee (1899-1986). Her father co-owned Globe's Barlay, Higdon, and Company livery, feed, and sale stable. Sammy Higdon married Fred Hare Jones (1887-1962) and the couple settled in Globe, where Fred Jones worked as a funeral director. Sammy Jones died in Globe in February of 1982.
This collection houses 218 photographs collected by J. F. Crampton depicting central and southern Arizona (primarily Globe) and its residents. Most of these images are silver gelatin prints; six panoramas, three stereographs, twelve postcards, and a few photomechanical processes are included. Views include street scenes, mines (including the Copper Hill Mine and the Old Dominion Mine) and miners, railroad workers, the first train to reach Globe, a train wreck, and the Stanwix and Gila Bend depots. People depicted include the Higdon family, students of the Old Adobe and Central schools, and such personalities as William Beard, Judge Aaron Hackney, Edward and William Hellings, Lorin Lynch, Captain P. A. Mullon, Joe Slimson, and Samuel Souther. Numerous Apache people are shown, including studio portraits and the council between General Crook and Geronimo. Landscape views include Globe, Roosevelt Dam, Coolidge Dam, the ruins of Mill City, Maricopa Wells, Fort McDowell, Devil's Canyon Trail, Fish Creek, and the Apache Trail.
