The International Visual Literacy Association Curricula in Visual Literacy Project was a program created by the International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA). Founded in 1967, the main objective of IVLA is the research, development, and promotion of visual literacy, a concept that refers to the way people interpret and learn to interpret visual forms of communication.
In 1981, the IVLA established the Curriculum Task Force headed by Professor Dennis Dake of Iowa State University. The Task Force was assigned to seek out with the assistance of IVLA members educational programs they felt were most exemplary in the use of visual instruction, visual learning, and the integration of visual education with other educational aspects.
After compiling over fifty nominations from IVLA members, the Task Force ranked the programs they felt were the most effective. The top twenty-four programs were contacted and asked to submit the philosophy behind their programs to the Task Force in more detail. Nineteen of the twenty four programs responded to the inquiry; their information, along with the Task Force's overall findings, were put together in a book entitled Curricula in Visual Literacy.
The International Visual Literacy Association Curricula in Visual Literacy Project (IVLACVLP) Papers include correspondence, program descriptions, photographs, and reports. The collection
, which runs from 1977 to 1982, is divided into four series.
Series I: Programs Appearing In Curricula In Visual Literacy contains files on the programs published in the book Curricula in Visual Literacy by the Visual Literacy Project Task Force. Each program file contains a Curriculum Questionnaire, a nomination form, and background material on the particular program. Some folders also include photographs showing the programs in action.
Series II: Programs Reviewed By The International Visual Literacy Task Force houses those programs suggested by International Visual Literacy Association members not published by the Task Force. Included in these folders are the Curriculum Questionnaires and background material on the programs in action.
Series III: Administrative Papers contains the original drafts of the Acceptance Agreements, the Task Force ballots, the Curriculum Questionnaire, and the nomination forms.
Series IV: Dennis Dake Correspondence is composed of letters to Dennis Dake regarding the various programs nominated by the Visual Literacy Project Task Force, the International Visual Literacy Association, and the Project Task Force members themselves. It also contains the notes and ballots used by the IVLA Task Force when they chose the top 24 programs that were considered for publication in Curriculums in Visual Literacy.
