Biographical Note
Marianne Grace Moody was born to James L. and Jennie Moody in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on September 11, 1953. She earned her B.S. (1974) and J.D. (1977) at Brigham Young University. While working on her law degree, Moody interned with the Federal Public Defender (1975) and the U.S. Attorney (1976) in Las Vegas, Nevada. She married Terry H. Jennings on November 5, 1976 and the couple had five children, Sarah, Claire (deceased), Sam, Hannah (deceased), and John.
Jennings came to Arizona State University as an Assistant Professor in the College of Business in 1977 and was subsequently promoted to Associate Professor (1980) and Professor (1983). She also served on the Arizona Corporation Commission (1984-1985), as Associate Dean of the College of Business (1986-1988), as faculty athletic representative to the NCAA and the PAC-10 (1986-1987), as faculty director for the MBA Executive Program (2006-2007), and as chair of the University Hearing Board (1995-2011). Jennings wrote extensively, publishing over 130 professional articles and 6 monographs and textbooks including Business: Its Legal, Ethical, and Global Environment, A Business Tale: A Study of Ethics, Choices, Success – and a Very Large Rabbit, and The Seven Signs of Ethical Collapse. Jennings also served as a contributing editor for the Real Estate Law Journal, New Perspectives, The Smart Manager, and the Corporate Finance Review; as a member of the Board of Editors for the Financial Analysts Journal (2007); and as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Legal Studies Education (2003-2004).
Jennings began writing a weekly opinion column for the Arizona Republic in 1991. She later wrote a similar column for the East Valley Tribune. Other of Jennings' pieces have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Tribune, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Readers' Digest. She also consulted for a wide variety of law firms, corporations, and professional groups including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Southern California Edison, Motorola, Bell Helicopter, IBM, and the cities of Mesa, Phoenix, and Tucson in addition to conducting workshops and seminars in the areas of business, personal, government, legal, academic, and professional ethics.
Jennings retired from Arizona State University in 2011 after having taught for 35 years. She continues to teach graduate courses in business ethics around the country, to conduct workshops, and to speak at a variety of events.
Scope and Content Note
This collection houses correspondence, newspaper clippings, publications, legal documents, financial records, book and article manuscripts, and other materials documenting Marianne Jennings' work as a Professor at Arizona State University, as a public speaker, and as a columnist for the Arizona Republic and the East Valley Tribune. Also included are items describing Jennings' feelings about her role as a working mother and describing the difficulties associated with raising a severely disabled child.
Series I: Personal Papers has been divided into two sub-series. Sub-Series A: Biographical houses correspondence, vitas, biographical sketches, awards, and other materials documenting Jennings' life and work. Two of her children, Sarah and Claire Jennings, are also represented. Sub-Series B: Other Papers houses correspondence, clippings, petitions, and other materials primarily showing Jennings' service on the Arizona Corporation Commission and her efforts to improve mathematics education in the Mesa, Arizona public schools.
Series II: U.S. District Attorney's Office (Nevada) houses a number of examples of cases that Jennings helped to prepare while interning in the District Attorney's Office in Las Vegas.
Series III: Arizona State University has been divided into four sub-series. Sub-Series A: College of Business and Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics contains correspondence, brochures, evaluations, grant proposals, clippings, and reports showing Jennings' teaching career and tenure as Head of the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics at ASU. Sub-Series B: Athletic Representative includes clippings, correspondence, and other materials documenting Jennings' term as Faculty Athletic Representative. Of particular interest are the materials describing the controversy following Jennings' ruling that Stacy Harvey was ineligible to play on ASU's football team. Sub-Series C: Legal Materials Regarding Arizona State University documents Jennings' work with the University Hearings Board. These materials have been restricted in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Sub-Series D: EEOC Grievances and Misconduct in Science Investigation is restricted until 2050 in accordance with the donor's wishes.
Series IV: Speaking Engagements and NPR Commentaries consists primarily of programs for conferences and other events that Jennings presented speeches or professional workshops to. The majority of these presentations took place at conferences regarding business ethics, but such organizations as the Boy Scouts are also represented. Full transcripts of the speeches that Jennings delivered are seldom included with the exception of Jennings' commentaries on National Public Radio (NPR).
Series V: Books houses drafts, comments from reviewers, page proofs, correspondence regarding permissions, correspondence with publishers, and other materials documenting several books that Jennings wrote alone and with various co-authors. Among the best documented of these works are Real Estate Law (Sub-Series A), Business: Its Legal, Ethical, and Global Environment (Sub-Series B), Case Studies in Business Ethics (Sub-Series C), Building a Business Through Good Times and Bad: Lessons from Fifteen Companies, Each With a Century of Dividends (Sub-Series D), A Business Tale: A Study of Ethics, Choices, Success – and a Very Large Rabbit (Sub-Series E), and The Seven Signs of Ethical Collapse (Sub-Series F). The majority of the materials in Sub-Series G: Other Books are items designed to promote books by Jennings other than those represented in Sub-Series A through Sub-Series F.
Series VI: Journal Articles and Newspaper Columns has been divided into three sub-series. Sub-Series A: Journal Articles houses draft and published copies of articles appearing in such professional journals as Marketing News, Real Estate Law Journal, Arizona Attorney, and The Journal of Legal Studies Education. Unless otherwise noted, Jennings was the author or co-author of all of these works. Also included are pieces about raising a disabled child written for such magazines as Exceptional Parent. Sub-Series B: Newspaper Columns houses draft and final copies of opinion pieces that Jennings wrote for the Arizona Republic and the East Valley Tribune on a variety of subjects, including the difficulties faced by working mothers, the challenges of being a conservative woman in academia, the issues associated with raising a severely disabled child, the American political system, and the state of the modern American family. Sub-Series C: Typescripts houses typescript versions of the articles contained in Sub-Series A and Sub-Series B. The differences between these typescripts and the published versions of the articles are generally minor.
Series VII: Subject Files consists primarily of newspaper clippings on a variety of subjects that Jennings seems to have collected for use in writing her columns for the Arizona Republic and the East Valley Tribune. Where possible, Jennings' folder titles have been retained; titles assigned by the archivist appear in brackets.
