Biographical Note

Peterson Zah was born December 2, 1937 in Low Mountain, Arizona to Henry and Mae (Multine) Zah. Zah attended Phoenix Indian School until 1960 then went to Arizona State University graduating in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He holds honorary doctor of law degrees from both Colorado College and the College of Santa Fe.

From 1983 to 1987 Zah served as chairman of the Navajo Tribal Council at Window Rock, governing the largest reservation in the United States. Zah focused much time and energy on reforming education. In 1990 Zah became the first elected president in the new Navajo Nation. He worked with his childhood friend, Hopi tribal leader Ivan Sidney, to attempt to work out the difficulties of U.S. government imposed relocation in the Navajo-Hopi land dispute.

Peterson Zah served as Special Advisor to the President on American Indian Affairs for Arizona State University from 1995 to 2010.


Scope and Content Note

The Peterson Zah Collection Regarding American Indian Affairs at ASU contains meeting calendars and miscellaneous papers from December 1995 to August 2010. The bulk of the collection consists of meeting calendars from January/February of 1996 to October/November 2009. The remaining portion of the collection consists of undated meeting calendars, materials such as National Museum of the American Indian integrated marketing feasibility report contacts, papers relating to financial aid resources, the Friendship House Association of American Indian, Inc. and the Hanks/Redhouse Case clan relationships.

This collection consists of six boxes.

Access Restrictions

To view this collection, please contact Ask an Archivist or call (480) 965-4932 at least five days in advance. Appointments in the Wurzburger Reading Room at Hayden Library (rm. 138) on the Tempe campus are available Monday through Friday. Patrons can also arrange to view this collection at the Labriola National American Indian Data Center (rm. 305) at Fletcher Library on the West campus. Check the ASU Library Hours page for current availability.
