Biographical Note
David S. Hall is a specialist in mishap prevention and investigation, primarily in aviation and related fields. He earned a B.S. in electrical engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1957 and an M.S. in systems management from the University of Southern California in 1972.
Following service as an aviator in the U.S. Navy (1957-1962), Hall worked as a flight test engineer for the Lockheed-California Company from 1962 to 1966. In 1967, Hall went to work for Garrett AiResearch Manufacturing Company of Arizona as a senior flight test engineer, a position he held until 1969 when he joined the faculty of the Institute of Aerospace Safety and Management at University of Southern California. He returned to Garrett AiResearch Manufacturing in 1973 as a senior product safety specialist. Hall remained at Garrett AiResearch until 1978 and was supervisor of engineering flight test in 1976-1977. From 1979 to 1983, he served as Director of Research in the Crash Research Institute, Robertson Research, Inc.
From 1969 to 2007, Hall worked as a consultant in accident cause determination and accident reconstruction. He also has served as a faculty member or lecturer at numerous institutions, including the University of Southern California's Institute of Aerospace Safety and Management (1969-1973); Arizona State University (1973-1986); International Center for Safety Education, Tempe, Arizona (1981-1992); and the International Center for Aviation Safety (1986-1998).
Hall also works in the field of human sexuality as a sexologist. He earned a Ph.D. from the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in 1995. He is on the faculty of the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality and also serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Psychology at the University of the Pacific.
Scope and Content
These papers document David S. Hall's work as a safety scientist and accident investigator. The bulk of the collection consists of case files for aviation accident investigations conducted by Hall. Other files include reports and articles written by Hall as well as reference material used by him in his research and accident investigations.
Aviation accident investigation case files vary in scope depending on the nature and extent of Hall's investigation. The most extensive files may include accident reports (NTSB, FAA, military, etc.), depositions, photographs of aircraft wreckage and of individual components, aircraft information, pilot logs, correspondence, air traffic control (ATC) transcripts or audio recordings, engineering test reports, witness statements, notes, and secondary sources such as articles or conference papers. Other case files consist solely of a deposition given by David Hall.
Papers and reports written by David Hall relate to accident investigation, emergency locator transmitters (ELTs), crash resistant fuel systems, crash sensors, and crashworthiness. Papers, reports, articles, and publications collected by Hall as reference material to support his research and investigation activities cover a wide range of areas related to aviation and safety. Topics include accident studies and statistics, altimeters, automotive safety, crash tests, crashworthiness, ELTs, fire, fixed-wing aircraft, fuel systems, human factors, investigation techniques, litigation and legal issues, professional organizations, restraint, rotorcraft, seats, specific aircraft manufacturers and models, stall/spin studies, survivability, system safety, and wind shear.
Arrangement
The David S. Hall Papers are organized in three series, one of which--Reference Materials--is comprised of three subseries.
Open with the exception of certain documents in the accident investigation case files (Series 3) which are restricted due to proprietary information. Consult archives staff for more information.
