Charles William Miller was born 22 January 1917 in Seattle. He studied aeronautical engineering at the University of Washington, where his father Alfred Lawrence Miller was a professor of civil engineering.
Following graduation in 1938, Miller moved to the Los Angeles area to work for Lockheed Aircraft Company and its subsidiary, Vega Aircraft Corporation. In the mid-1940s he started working at North American Aviation in the Aerodynamics Group, and in the early 1950s joined Northrop Aircraft, Inc., as a Preliminary Design Engineer. In 1957 Miller joined the Guided Missile Division of the Ramo-Wooldridge Corporation (later Thompson Ramo Wooldridge, better known as "TRW").
Miller married Esther Rasmussen on 7 October 1939, in Glendale, California. The couple had two children, Paul and Karen (Stupak). Following Miller's retirement from TRW in 1979, they moved to Sedona, Arizona.
Charles W. Miller died on 28 February 2014.
The Charles W. Miller papers document his aeronautical engineering work, his talent as an artist and cartoonist, and his interests in aviation history and aircraft design. The collection includes reports; design drawings, calculations, and notes; memoranda; handbooks; and other reference material from Miller's work at Lockheed, Vega Aircraft Corporation, North American Aviation, and Northrop Aircraft. Also included are sketches and pen-and-ink drawings by Miller, including illustrations for a booklet "Do You Know the Flight Rules?" as well as other educational and humorous cartoons. Also included are publications and newspaper/magazine clippings collected by Miller related to early aviation history, World War II, aircraft, and developments in aerospace design.
Collection is currently unprocessed; permission of Archivist required for access.
