Biographical Note

Richard F. Chandler joined the FAA Civil Aeromedical Institute (CAMI) in 1970 and served as head of the protection and survival laboratory from 1971 until his retirement in 1989. Prior to joining CAMI, he worked with John P. Stapp on rocket sled experiments at Holloman Air Force Base (as a USAF officer and later as a civilian contractor) and also performed automotive crash research for the National Bureau of Standards.


Scope and Content

The Richard F. Chandler papers include materials documenting his aeromedical research and professional activities as well as subject and reference materials that he collected. Included are Chandler's publications, reports, and presentations, and other files related to his work with John Paul Stapp at Holloman AFB, as head of the protection and survival lab at the FAA Civil Aeromedical Institute, and independent research and consulting following his retirement from the FAA. Subjects include crashworthiness and crash testing, biodynamics, seats and restraint systems, evacuation, etc.
