Biographical Note

John George Babbitt, president of Babbitt Ranches, Arizona State Senator and member of the Arizona Board of Regents, was born in Flagstaff, Arizona on May 19, 1908 and passed away there August 5, 1993. His father Charles "C.J." Babbitt was one of the five Babbitt brothers who moved to Flagstaff, from Cincinnati, Ohio and established an entrepreneurial and financial empire in northern Arizona. John received his elementary and secondary education in Los Angeles where his mother resided. During the summers, John returned to Arizona's high country, and worked and lived with his father. John attended college at Santa Clara College, and Georgetown before graduating from Loyola University of Los Angeles as valedictorian in 1929, he later graduated with a business degree from Babson College in Boston, Massachusetts in 1931. While attending Babson he met and married Elizabeth "Betty" Quimby and opened a small brokerage business.

In 1934 John returned to Flagstaff at the request of his father to work for the family business. For a number of years John worked with Victor Watson who managed the Babbitt's Arizona Livestock Loan Company and helped manage the CO bar Ranch. Around 1942, George Babbitt's son, Herbert, left as CO Bar manager and John stepped into that position. A position John held until his retirement in 1984. Over the next 30 years John and foreman, Frank Banks, made many improvements to the CO Bar ranch.

As John began to learn the job of manager of the CO Bar a twist of fate redirected his future. John's brother, Jim died in 1944 while serving as a member of the Arizona Senate. John was appointed to fill his term. In 1946 he was elected to a term of his own and later became Senate President. In 1950 he retired from the senate but went on to spend 16 years on the Arizona State Board of Regents. He also served on the board of directors for Valley National Bank and Mountain Bell. John also maintained an active role in the Arizona Cattle Growers' Association and served as president in 1950-1951. Even after retirement, John continued to serve on the board of directors of Babbitt ranch operations.

John G. Babbitt died on August 5, 1993. Mr. Babbitt's long productive life brought him many honors; Knight of Malta, honorary degrees from both University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University, and naming of the Babbitt Administration Building at Northern Arizona University.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains bits and pieces of the historical record related to John G. Babbitt. The first two series represent files of a personal nature. Series one contains items related to Babbitt genealogy, education and personal activities. Of interest are items that concern Flagstaff's St. Mary's Catholic School, and the continual push to build a highway near the Babbitt's Flagstaff residence. The second series documents some of his legislative activity, and much of his Flagstaff community service. Important here was his work on the Board of Regents and his championing of Northern Arizona University.

Series three and four represent records from his work with the Babbitt Brothers Trading Company and his presidency of the Babbitt Ranches. Series five contains the Photograph Collection and complements much of the manuscript collection. These records are but a small incomplete record of his involvement of these business ventures. Of significance are the documents related to a land donation to Wupatki National Monument and an early minute book from the CO Bar Ranch. These documents dovetail nicely with the larger Babbitt Brothers Trading Post Collection, NAU.MS.83.
