Historical Note

Desert Magazine was the creation of newspaperman Randall Henderson. Henderson established this magazine in 1937 and it became an important information source for historians and explorers of the southwest until it ceased publication in 1985. Henderson, a dynamic individual, embarked on his career as a journalist in 1910 for the Los Angeles Times. In 1911 he obtained his A.B. degree in economics and sociology from the University of California in Los Angeles. After receiving his degree he continued his career as a journalist. He worked in Parker, Arizona for the Parker Post. Later he became the editor of the Blythe, California Weekly Herald. In 1922 he moved from Blythe to Calexico, California and became editor and publisher of the Calexico Daily Chronicle. In 1933 he sold the Chronicle and started a printing shop in El Centro, California. In El Centro, Henderson and his friend, Wilson McKinney, started Desert Magazine. The magazine focused on the southwest. Henderson acted as editor of this popular magazine until 1959. He continued to write a column entitled "Just Between You and Me". Mr. Henderson remained as Advisory Editor until 1960. The magazine saw a succession of editors until its end in 1985. Eugene Conrotto, 1959 to 1963; Jack Pepper, 1963 to 1973; William Knyvett (Publisher to Publisher-Editor), 1968-1979; Donald McDonald, 1979 to 1981; and Jacqueline Shannon, 1982 to 1985.

The department of Special Collection and Archives purchased this collection the Book Gallery of Phoenix in 1994. Prior to purchase many of the files had been sold or destroyed most notably the business records and the Grand Canyon files.
