Biographical NoteMargaret Elizabeth Goddard Myhr, who was known as Margaret Goddard when she assembled the material for this collection, was born to the Thompson family in 1918 near Maxwell, Iowa. Her early life on the family farm consisted mostly of reading, playing games and listening to baseball games on the radio. She attended college for three years at Ames, Iowa. In 1937 Myhr married Walter Friesner and had 6 children. In 1951 she divorced and moved to be nearer to her parents in Cottonwood, AZ. Myhr finished her elementary education degree at the Arizona State Teacher's College in Flagstaff. She taught in Tucson briefly before marrying Cottonwood rancher Jesse Goddard in 1957. They moved to Huachuca City to run a motel. Margaret started teaching there and soon had a seventh child (Jesse's first). Margaret taught at Fort Huachuca for awhile and then completed a master's degree in Education from the University of Arizona in Tucson. Jesse became ill, and the family moved to Camp Verde in 1971. While in the Verde Valley, Margaret commuted to NAU in order to take courses in library science. She gave up teaching and spent more time with Jesse researching the history of the Verde Valley and Arizona. They worked several years getting the state to recognize General Crook's Trail. It was also during this time that she concentrated on her scrapbooks. Jesse died in 1983, and Margaret moved in with her mother and began studying genealogy. She also planned to build a passive solar home in the Verde Valley. She remarried in the late 1980s to Mr. Myhr, and moved to Sun City, AZ. Margaret Goddard died on November 8, 2004. Scope and Content NoteThe Margaret Goddard Collection (ca. 1930, 1957-1983) consists of five boxes and 2 oversize scrapbooks. The 37 scrapbooks and additional printed matter and notes in the Margaret Goddard collection are arranged in the following three series: Printed Matter and Notes (ca. 1930, 1973-1982); Indexed Scrapbooks (1957-1982); Non-indexed scrapbooks (1955-1983). The majority of this collection consists of scrapbooks, which contain information on the history of many Arizona events, people, and places. These topics include: Stockgrowers, Camp Verde, Native Americans, Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon, and King Woosley. The researcher is encouraged to review the inventory sheets before using the collection, as the inventory has a complete listing of topics. Because the majority of scrapbooks are indexed alphabetically by subject in the index card box in box one, it is also easy to access information on various other topics as well as the ones listed above. The Printed Matter and Notes Series contains some interesting information dealing with the projects that the Goddards were involved with during the 1970s. These projects include the naming of Crook's Trail and Thirtenn Mile Rock. Also of interest in this series is a collection of cowboy songbooks. This collection is a useful resource for researchers who are looking for research topics because so much of the material is secondary in nature. The index to the scrapbooks should be helpful as well as the inventory included in this finding guide. OrganizationOrganized in 3 series.I. Printed Matter and Notes, ca. 1930, 1973-1982. II.
