Biographical Note

The Lauzon family immigrated from Quebec, Canada to Colorado sometime in the 1880s. The father, Francois Lauzon, arrived first. On 21 May 1884 he became a United States Citizen in Delta County, Colorado. According to his son, Hubert "Bert" Lauzon, his father homesteaded a ranch in Western Colorado along the Uncompaghre River and spent several years mining in Colorado in the 1880s. During this period his family lived in Compton Village, Quebec, Canada. Bert was born in Compton on 25 January 1885. By the 1890s the entire family lived in Colorado.

Francois' main interest was mining. In the early 1880s he mined in the Colorado cities of Leadville, Lake City, Ouray and Silverton. In 1898 Francois was lured away to the Gold Rush of Alaska. He returned to Colorado in 1900. The next year his wife Mary passed away. Francois left his Colorado ranch sometime after 1904 and began to move around to different mining towns throughout Arizona, Nevada, California and Mexico.

At about the same time, Bert dropped out of school, in 1902, to train and race horses for a friend. His interest in horses became a life long pursuit. He raced horses for about a year before going to work in the mines of the San Juan Mining District in Colorado. Around 1906 Bert, and his brother Maurice, traveled to Goldfield, Nevada and joined their father. For the next two years Bert traveled between Nevada, Southern Arizona, Mexico and California. In December 1909 he rejoined his family in Los Angeles. At this point the family headed into Baja, Mexico to continue prospecting for Gold.

Bert arrived at the Grand Canyon during the year 1910. At the time of his arrival he had traveled, mined and worked horses throughout the Southwest and parts of Mexico. At the Grand Canyon he was employed by William Wallace Bass as a tour guide and hired hand. While in the employ of Bass, he met Bass's daughter Edith. The two were married in 1917. The Lauzons had three children -- Hubert F., Loren and Muriel. Sadly Edith died in 1924 from medical complications. Bert married Rosa White, the Grand Canyon school teacher in 1927.

Bert went to work for Coconino County, in 1919, as the caretaker of the Bright Angel Trail. In this capacity he collected tolls and helped maintain the trail. He worked for the county until 1928 when local officials transferred the trail to the federal government. In addition to trail caretaker, he served as the elected Justice of the Peace for the Grand Canyon District, a position he held until 1928. Later that year he was elected Constable of the Grand Canyon. In 1929 he became a National Park Service Ranger and he resigned as Constable. He worked for the Park Service until his retirement in 1951. Shortly after retirement Bert passed away in 1951.

Bert enjoyed adventure and excitement. In 1911 he joined the Kolb Brothers for the remainder of their famous Colorado River trip. In the 1938 the Park Service asked him to investigate rumors of miniature horses in the Grand Canyon, and this lead to the noted 1938 Little Horse expedition. His diaries are full of stories of serving warrants throughout the region. Occasionally, he traveled to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to serve warrants.

Bert also was a rancher. He homesteaded a ranch in the Grand Canyon region in 1917. On the ranch Bert raised cows, turkeys and chickens, but horse breeding was his primary interest. He kept detailed records of the number of horses he had, their pedigree and the expenses incurred.

In 1928, Bert and his second wife, Rosa purchased the White House from W.W. Bass. This gave the family a home closer to Bert's work and to the school for their children. After Bert's death, his wife Rosa and their son Hubert F. Lauzon, continued to operate the ranch and hold mining claims at the Grand Canyon.

Scope and Content Note

The Lauzon family collection consists of a variety of historic documents and photographs (see series 10 for a description of the photograph component) that describe and depict the family's early life in northern Arizona, primarily at the Grand Canyon, from the early 1900s into the 1980s. The papers were created primarily by Hubert "Bert" Lauzon. They describe his work as rancher, miner, tourist guide, caretaker for the Bright Angel Trail and Grand Canyon National Park Ranger. The collection includes material about the Lauzon Family and their continued interest in mining and ranching after Bert's death in 1951. This later material was created by Bert's son, Hubert F. Lauzon.

This collection is significant not only because it details the economic development of the northern Arizona region but also because collection parallels similar development throughout much of the West. The conflicts in today's west over issues of tourism, natural resource development and the role of the federal government find their roots in places such as the Grand Canyon. All of these varying issues are documented to some extent in this collection and through the life of Bert Lauzon and his family. As the Grand Canyon matured as a National Park, the conflict between miners and ranchers over mining claims, homestead boundaries and grazing permits heightened. This debate is exemplified in series five in correspondence with the Forest Service over grazing permits and in series six with homestead boundary questions.

The collection also documents the work and personal lives of people living in remote areas such as the Grand Canyon. The correspondence in series one between Bert Lauzon and Edith Bass Lauzon is tremendous. Not only do these letters tell the story of their courtship, they also describe life at the Grand Canyon during the 1910s and early 1920s.

Bert Lauzon's diaries comprise another rich part of the collection. These diaries include everything from his 1911 Colorado River trip with the Kolb Brothers to his 1938 journey in search of miniature horses in the Grand Canyon. More important are the diaries that detail his daily work as a stockman, law enforcement officer and National Park Ranger.

Finally, the collection contains an eclectic mixture of Bert Lauzon's reminiscences as well as those of his son, Hubert. In addition, Hubert continued to collect historical material about the Canyon. His files contain a wealth of historical information about the Canyon area from 1960 until his death in 1993.

Series two, box 3, notebooks and diaries, 1904-1947.
Twenty-eight small notebooks that contain diary entries and notes. Of the 28 volumes, 25 belonged to Bert Lauzon. These have been placed into chronological order. In the notebooks Bert recorded his observations, lists of needed items, hours worked, etc. On longer trips Bert would keep daily diary entries.
Two volumes stand out. One is the journal of a 1911-1912 Colorado River trip that Lauzon took with the Kolb Brothers. There are actually two copies of the journal from this trip -- one appears to have been written on the trip and one, transcribed after the trip. The second significant volume is the journal of the 1938 little horse expedition. Together these diaries document the active life of Bert Lauzon in his many occupational roles.
The other twenty-five volumes have been placed into chronological order. Volume 26, from 1904-1905 contains entries from an unknown author living in Colorado. The author mentioned Bert, his brother Maurice and Francois Lauzon. Volume 27, belonged to Edith Lauzon and contains entries from 1914 while she attended school in Oakland, California, from 1917-1918 when she lived at the Grand Canyon. Volume 28 appears to be notes kept by Hubert F. Lauzon.

This narrative gives an excellent perspective on life at the Canyon at the turn of the century and of the growing tourist business. Ada was intricately involved with her husband's Grand Canyon tourist business. This copy is a typescript of the original which is housed at the Arizona Historical Society's Tucson repository.

Series five, boxes 4-5, Lauzon Family Occupational Documents, 1917-1965.
Forty-one folders containing material pertaining to the occupational pursuits of the Lauzon family. The records primarily document Bert's work as a rancher, caretaker of the Bright Angel Trail, constable and National Park Service Ranger. The documents also touch upon the activities of Bert's spouses and children. The material has been arranged chronologically with the following subject categories law enforcement, ranching, mining and Bright Angel Trail caretaker.
Folders 82-114 contains extensive documentation of Bert Lauzon's involvement in law enforcement, ranching and mining. Bert's detailed records of his horse business presents a rich documentary picture of raising horses in northern Arizona and their obvious importance to the lifestyle of the period. This material pertains to breeding, sales transactions and grazing permit information. Accompanying these documents are ranch supply catalogs and publications of interest to the Arizona rancher. Of particular note is the first issue of the National Forest Permittees' Association Bulletin. This bulletin, published in Phoenix was the mouthpiece of Arizona ranchers who used the forest for grazing livestock. The publication, dated 1922, presented a very positive attitude toward the Forest Service. These same records also document the family's poultry and cattle interests.
Documents in this series also tell about the family's involvement in mining. Included are assay reports, mining claims, procedures and regulations, tax notices and the sale of Bass' claims along with the White House to Lauzon.
The ranching and mining documents continue after the death of Bert Lauzon in 1951.
Folders 116-117 contain two ledgers that document Bert's work as Bright Angel Trail caretaker and Grand Canyon Justice of the Peace. These volumes cover the years 1919-1926. They note the tolls collected from travelers, repairs made to the trail and other expenses encountered. In addition there are entries for "constable business" for each year from 1921- 1928. Finally, the ledgers also track Bert's salary and expenses, including a separate accounting of his horse feed bill.
Because of the condition of the ledgers a use copy has been created and placed into folders 118-199.

The most significant images in the collection are those that document the ranching activities of the Lauzon and Bass families and their neighbors. The bulk were taken during the lifetime of Hubert "Bert" Lauzon, and possibly by him as well. The dozens of images of Lauzon horses, most of which are identified by name and date, can be correlated with information in diaries in the Lauzon Family manuscript collection. A wealth of information on ranch material culture is present in both the foregrounds and backgrounds of the photographs. Many of the captions are as informative as the photographs themselves. Bert Lauzon's captions for the "Little Horse Trip" (during which the Park Service was investigating reports of miniature horses in the Grand Canyon) photos given to him by Edwin McKee, for example, are quite different from those written by McKee himself (see the McKee collection, NAU.PH.95.48).
Also of note in the collection are the various portraits, both posed in the studio and casually snapped at home, of Lauzon and Bass family members, photographs of the Bass camps and activities, rodeos at Grand Canyon, Ash Fork, and Prescott, people and activities on and near the Havasupai Reservation, and the mines in which members of the Lauzon family were involved.
