William Wares served as the manager of the Soledad Sugar Mill near Cienfuegos, Cuba. For many years, Wares and the mill owner, William Claflin of Boston, embarked on a hunting, fishing, or exploring expedition together. After the Cuban revolution, the mill was nationalized, and Wares returned to the United States.
