Biographical Note
Kathleen Wise, born in Freemont Ohio, lived in Flagstaff, Arizona for 30 years. Professionally, she worked as the secretary for the mayor of Flagstaff; however, she was primarily known for her river running activities in the region. She ran the Colorado River through the Glen and the Grand canyons, as well as running other rivers such as the Yukon in Alaska. She was also fond of visiting national parks and monuments in the Southwest, including Canyonlands, Monument Valley, Dead Horse Point State Park in Utah, among others.
Kathleen Wise passed away on March 16, 2001.
Scope and Content Note
The Kathleen Wise Collection contains both slides and prints of her many river trips and excursions throughout the Southwest region, including the Grand Canyon, Glen Canyon (pre dam), Canyonlands National Park and many other Colorado Plateau parks. The collection is organized in 29 series. The inclusive dates of the collection are 1950-1959. Of particular interest are the images of running the Colorado through Glen canyon before the Glen Canyon Dam was constructed. Most of the images are of the boats and river runners, both in the water and on the shore. There are also many scenic images of the rivers and canyons.
