American astronomer and educator, founder of the science of dendrochronology. Associated with the Harvard College Observatory, 1889-1894, and its expedition to Peru; as well as the Lowell Observatories in Flagstaff, Arizona, 1894-1901, and Mexico, 1896-1897. At the University of Arizona, Tucson, 1906-1962; served as professor, dean and acting president, first director of the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research, and also the Steward Observatory.
Chiefly materials related to A.E. Douglass' astronomical and tree-ring research, and administraiton, at the Harvard College Observatory, Lowell Observatories, Steward Observatory, Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research, and University of Arizona. Includes scientific records; clippings; photographs of astronomical images, observatories, and tree-rings; typescripts of speeches and manuscripts; his published articles; reprints of articles by others; and lecture notes. Correspondence with other scientists includes William Henry Pickering, Percival Lowell, Godfrey Sykes, and Edmund Schulman. Personal correspondence is with his wife Ida Whittington Douglass, and other family members and friends. Drafts, proofs, and final editions, (1919-1936) from of his book Climatic Cycles and Tree Growth. Involvement with scientific organizations such as the Carnegie Institution, 1918-1938, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1919-1950, is documented; as are his scholarly contributions to conferences. Personal items cover his childhood and his student days at Trinity College, Hartford, 1885-1889; travels to other countries; and participation in numerous civic and Masonic groups. An unpublished biography of Douglass by David Brinegar is present. Photographs, mainly black-and-white, some cyanotype, depict professional and social activities, personal life, and travels. The South American photographs from the 1890s include Inca ruins in Bolivia, topical views of Chile, and the Harvard College Observatory in Arequipa, Peru. Over ninety 16mm and 35mm silent films, shot by Andrew Ellicott Douglass from 1929 to 1950, document Douglass's research activities, as well as personal activities and travel. The sixth series is audio-visual materials and is divided into four sub-series: photographs and negatives, color slides, motion picture film, and sound recordings. Additional photographs can be found in the series, Research Files. Films in box 182 have been placed in cold storage due to fragile condition.
Several items have been restricted. Please see the container list for more details. Use of original audiovisual materials is restricted due to their fragile nature. The motion picture films in this collection have been digitized for research access. Some films have been restricted due to culturally sensitive content. Series III: University of Arizona, 1904-1962
Scope and Contents | |||||||||||
These boxes focus on the period from Dr. Douglass's arrival at the University in 1906 to 1937/38, when he became Director of the newly-established Laboratory of Tree Ring Research and relinquished the active headship of Steward Observatory to Dr. Edwin Carpenter. During these years he was teacher, head of the Astronomy Department, acting University President, Dean of the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, and Director of Steward Observatory.
With but one important exception, no attempt has been made to segregate this material into sub-categories, or even to separate his correspondenc with other observatories or astronomers, because it is so inter-woven--both administratively and professionally. The exception, however, is the removal of all correspondence and material relating to his research on tree rings--a monumental endeavor carried on concurrently with all his other duties and activities. This material is so voluminous and specialized that it has been arranged separately, and will be found in boxes 64-84. Therefore, the user should remain aware that a large body of correspondence for this period (1908-1938) of Dr. Douglass's university years is filed elsewhere.
The designation "correspondence" has been employed rather freely, for included also are personal notes pertaining to administration, official University communications from various offices, programs of University events attended by Dr. Douglass, and some clippings relating to University matters.
Because budgets and annual reports of the Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory were inter-related and often made jointly, they have been placed together.

Astronomy and Meteorology Reprints,
Scope and Contents | |||||||||||
Dr. Douglass acquired a large number of reprints and miscellaneous publications on various scientific subjects. He also clipped articles from periodicals. Those items which came to Special Collections have been retained here for two reasons: many were written by associates, students, distinguished scientists with whom he corresponded, and all of them reflect his special interests in the fields of both astronomy and meteorology.
They have been grouped into rather broad subjects, arranged alphabetically, but no attempt has been made to list them by author or date.

Series VI: Motion picture films, 1929-1955 1995-1996 2011
Scope and Contents | |||||||||||
Over ninety 16mm and 35mm silent motion picture films, shot by Andrew Ellicott Douglass from 1929 to 1955, document Douglass's research activities, as well as personal activities and travel. Films are described at the item level by prefixes and titles assigned by the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research, and arranged alphanumerically by prefix. Prefix designations are assigned by fields of study or subject matter, and are as follows: ARCH (archaeology), ASTR (astronomy), GEOL (geology), LTRR (Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research), MISC (miscellaneous). The majority of the films are in black and white, two are in color. DVD preservation copies of selected films are housed in box 184. 16mm and DVD preservation copies were created in 2011 with a grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation. One folder of notes in Box 184 includes notations from A.E. Douglass on content and technical specifications of films, as well as descriptive notes on films from LTRR staff. Use of original audio visual materials is restricted due to their fragile nature. Some of the motion picture films in this collection have been digitized for research access. Films in box 182 have been placed in cold storage due to fragile condition. Please contact Special Collections for more information.
The films document Douglass's broad professional undertakings, including the beam expeditions of 1929 that uncovered Beam HH-39, a specimen from the Show Low archaeological site in Navajo County, Arizona. The beam allowed Douglass to apply dendrochronology in accurately dating ancient indigenous settlement sites to the 13th century, and track cultural development in the desert Southwest. Further films document the panoramic chronology that Douglass developed based on the tree-ring record, as well as techniques associated with taking, reading, and cross-dating tree-ring samples. Some of these films were shot on Ancestral Puebloan sites and tribal lands.
PLINT films document the function of the Planetary Interpolator—a machine that A.E. Douglass invented in order to determine the alignment of planets at any calendar date. Cycloscope (also known as the periodograph or cyclograph) films record use of a photographic device developed by Douglass to track correlating patterns between the climatic and solar records and the tree ring record. The films designated as MISC record sites in Tucson, Arizona, as well as Douglass's travels in New Mexico, Montana, Vermont, and multiple sites in Europe from the late 1920s through the 1940s.
Notable colleagues of Douglass featured in these films include: Harold S. Colton, Lyndon L. Hargrave, Emil W. Haury, Edgar L. Hewett, Neil M. Judd, William H. Pickering, and Edmund Schulman.
The motion picture films in this collection have been digitized for research access with support from a Recordings at Risk grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). The grant program is made possible by funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The digitized films can be viewed in the online exhibit, accessible at: The Films of Andrew Ellicott Douglass: Astronomer, Archaeologist, and Father of Tree-Ring Dating
