Abstract: | Louis C. Hughes, 1844-1915, was an Arizona pioneer, lawyer, newspaper publisher, and politician. Hughes established the Arizona Daily Star in 1877 and published it until his death. This collection contains a letter copybook of Hughes' correspondence while serving as Governor of Arizona Territory. Letters include references to appointments, recommendations, the territorial prison, and the Board of Regents. Letters are carbon copies and many are difficult to read. |

Arizona pioneer; lawyer, newspaper publisher, and politician. Hughes established the Arizona Daily Star in 1877 and published it until his death. He served as district attorney, probate judge, attorney general of Arizona, U.S. Court Commissioner, member and secretary to the Board of World's Fair Commissioners for Arizona, Governor of Arizona, 1893-1896, and chancellor of the Board of Regents, 1897-1898.
