Amateur historian; researcher of western forts.
Correspondence, articles, typescripts, notes, maps, charts, slides, and other materials, written or collected by Schilling, relating to the history and development of various forts in Arizona and New Mexico. Contains photostat copies of War Dept. files of New Mexico post returns, 1852-1884, outline index of Arizona military posts giving locations and dates of occupation, and descriptive report and maps for Fort Apache, Fort Grant, Fort Bowie, Fort Lowell, Fort McDowell, and Fort Mojave. Slides, taken ca. 1958-1960, are of both historical photographs and contemporary sites of forts in Arizona and New Mexico. Also present are notes, typescripts, and slides concerning Al Sieber, slides of Apache Indians, and charts which list posts alphabetically and chronologically by date activated.
