Biographical Note
Gay Liberation Arizona Desert (GLAD II) was local affiliation of the national Gay
Liberation Front. Their purpose in meeting was to educate the public and to raise the
level of awareness about gays in the Tucson Community.
Scope and Content Note
This collection includes correspondence, clippings, tapes, periodicals, and other
material concerning the gay liberation movement in Arizona and on the West Coast, and
related issues. Includes issues of the newspaper Gay Sunshine, 1970-1973.
Use of original audio visual materials is restricted due to their fragile nature.

gay liberation; to interest gays in the use of materials on these topics; and

Reel 1, side 1: Jack Latham and Dandelion Oquitadas examine theories and
definitions of homosexuality, traditional gender roles as models for homosexual
relationships, and heterosexism. Latham discusses building a bibliography on
the topic of homosexuality with the cooperation of the public and university
libraries and distributing it to gay people in the community. Volunteers and
speakers talk about how to address specific problems posed by callers to the
center.
Reel 1, side 2: Leaders and volunteers explore difference and what it means to
be an oppressed class of people. Latham and Oquitadas discuss recommended

Reel 2, side 1: Jack Latham describes the history and practice of consciousness
raising and the position of gay men as an oppressed minority group in society.
Latham discusses the history of the gay liberation movement, including the
Mattachine Society and the Stonewall Riots. The group discusses what they like
best and least about being gay.
Reel 2, side 2: Group members continue discussing what they like best and least
about being gay.
Reel 3, side 1: Jack Latham outlines the contraction and symptoms of sexually
transmitted infections (referred to here as VD) and precautions to take against
infection. He discusses the physiology of the anus and anal stimulation/sexual
activity. The group shares health clinic experiences.
Reel 4, side 1: Jack Latham discusses how gay men are oppressed or
discriminated against by the rule of law in the United States, including sodomy
and loitering/vagrancy laws. Latham describes employment discrimination against
gays, gay marriage, inheritance, and adoption--both of a partner as a means of
securing certain protections under the law and of children. He outlines
strategies to use when stopped by police. Latham describes upcoming cases
dealing with gay civil rights.
