Biographical NoteAmerican author and founder of the Westernlore Press, in 1941. Scope and Content NoteTypescript drafts and galley proofs of five works mainly concerned with the late nineteenth century history of the American West. Some contain Bailey's holograph edits; one, Grandpa was a Polygamist, is signed. Two are novels about the Great Basin Indians. The Claws of the Hawk: the Incredible Life of Wahker the Ute, focuses on events in the life of the leader Walkara. Ghost Dance Messiah: the Jack Wilson Story is about the Paiute prophet Wovoka, who originated a Ghost dance phenomenon of the late 1880s. The other three drafts concern Mormon life and history. The Armies of God: a Study of the Military Aspects of Mormonism is a chronicle of events from the 1830s to the 1890s. For Time and All Eternity is a novel about the Mormon polygamy crusade of the 1880s. Bailey relates stories from his own childhood in Grandpa was a Polygamist, which is a tribute to his grandfather, the teacher Joseph Barlow Forbes.
