Camp Groce, located near Hempstead, Texas, was converted into a Confederate military prison in June, 1863, and then abandoned in December, 1864. The 4th Infantry Regiment was led by Col. John Sayles, Lt. Col. James W. Barnes, and Major Moses Austin Bryan.
This muster roll is printed on both sides of one sheet, 52 x 65 cm. It lists names, ranks, when and where enlisted, whether present or absent, and reasons for absence. It covers the period from the 15th day of September 1863, when last mustered, to the 31st day of October 1863. Signed and dated October 31, 1863 at Camp Groce by Capt. L.N. Halbert. The Record of Events column signed by Lt. Col. James W. Barnes states "Engaged guarding Federal prisoners. Changed station from Camp Randell to Camp Groce. Men in good health but poorly armed."
