Historical Note

Brandon Sewell and William Branden founded the Braden Cooper Company in 1904. In 1905 the company purchased the El Teniente copper mine in Chile and built roads for carts to transport the ore as well as a concentrating plant. In 1915, The Kennecott Copper Corporation secured a controlling interest in the Braden Copper Company. The Chilean government purchased a 51% stake in the mine in 1967, establishing the Sociedad Minera El Teniente. Under this agreement, a new concentrator was built which vastly expanded the mine’s daily production. In 1971, El Teniente became a state owned operation under the Chilean nationalization of copper under President Salvador Allende.
